WHY DOES CANADA STILL SUPPORT COLOMBIA’S REPRESSIVE RIGHT While the latest uprising in Colombia is a strike against austerity measures, looked at another way, it is also a reaction to Canadian policies in the region. Indeed, over the past three decades, Ottawa has retained close diplomatic ties to Latin America’s most repressive state and promoted capitalist policies that have contributed to extreme levels of inequality within Colombia. BELARUS: FREEDOM AND SANCTIONS IN A PIPELINE COUNTRY Expressing solidarity with the US and Europe, Canada has joined in sanctions against Belarus, citing its concern for human rights and democracy. John Clarke / December 14, 2020. Canada shares with other settler colonial states a deeply rooted desire to deny or minimize the reality of dispossession and to disregard the Indigenous past. TEAR DOWN THAT STATUE! 20 hours ago · On Sunday night, demonstrators tore down the statue of Egerton Ryerson that stands outside the Toronto university named after him. Ryerson was a racist who helped build Canada’s residential school system and thus took part in the genocide of Indigenous peoples. Watching the statue fall, one could see a small but notable act of accountability. Here’s to many more. ALBERTA’S DRAFT CURRICULUM WILL MAKE THE PROVINCE A The United Conservative Party has already made Alberta a bumbling laughingstock, with its ‘war room’ attacking children’s cartoons, its massive investment in a pipeline to nowhere, its war on doctors and nurses in the middle of a pandemic, and its bungled response to the pandemic itself. Adding in an error-riddled social studies curriculum that would find a nice home in 1950 seems WILL THERE BE RESOURCE WARS IN A RENEWABLE FUTURE 19 hours ago · It’s tempting to conclude that the days when competition over finite supplies of energy was a recurring source of conflict will soon draw to a close. It is one thing to THE ‘S’ WORD IN AMERICAN POLITICS—TIME FOR A RECLAMATION 1 day ago · As President Joe Biden seeks approval on a $6 trillion budget, it will become increasingly unconvincing to give in to popular misunderstanding and continue throwing “socialism” under the bus. The president and his administration would do better to reclaim and rehabilitate the word by highlighting the proud legacy of socialist activism within the American labour movement. Their act of deception and shoddy legal work reek of colonial contempt, not to mention Islamophobic bias. The mystery bomber aside, they are the guilty party, and it is high time we placed them on the hot seat and exposed their multiple crimes against the long-suffering Dr. Hassan Diab. RIGHT-WING POPULISM AND THE REALIGNMENT OF WORKING-CLASS POLITICS INCANADA
Steven High
/ November
19, 2020
We can expect the Conservative Party to wrap itself in the Canadian flag and fire-up the culture wars. The hotter it gets, the better, for Erin O’Toole. To respond to this political challenge, now more than ever, those on the left need to find ways to bridge the politics of recognition and redistribution—and to re-engage with working-classcommunities.
