Updated: February 27, 2020 Share Adjust Comment Print Taxing short-term rentals listed online is projected to bring in $3 million this year in new revenue, the UCP government announced in itsbudget Thursday.
A four-per cent tourism tax charged to online rentals listed through companies like Airbnb brings them in line with hotels. The change, which was first announced in the fall budget, is expected to come into effect this summer. Legislation to be introduced in the spring will remove an existing exemption for rentals with less than four bedrooms. A new exemption will be put in place for rentals that are not listed online and charge less than $30 per day or $210 per week. The province projects that revenue from the change will rise to $4million in 2021-22.
