Share Adjust Comment Print When Praneet Akilla read the role of Philip Mishra for the new Netflix series October Faction, he was impressed with something that didn’t appear in the character. “For me, as an actor of colour, I think they could have easily incorporated his ethnicity as part of the storyline,” says the 27-year-old Mumbai-born, Calgary-raised actor. “But I’m glad we’re moving to a place that, when I read the script, being South Asian had nothing to do with the character arc at all other than having a South Asian last name. So that was refreshing compared to a lot of the parts I read for.” It’s not that Philip didn’t have enough complexities for an actor to embrace. October Faction, which was shot in Toronto and Cambridge, Ont., and begins streaming on Netflix Jan. 23, is a horror-comedy about retired monster hunters Fred and Deloris Allen (Tamara Tayler and J.C. MacKenzie), who take their teenage children to Fred’s hometown after the death of his father only to discover the small town isn’t as peaceful and tranquil as it seems. Among other things, there be monsters there: werewolves, vampires, witches and warlocks. Also, the couple’s teen son Geoff (Gabriel Darku) finds himself pitted against Philip, who is the high school’s alpha-male and star athlete and scion of the town’s most prominent family. “To compensate for all the pressures that he has, he takes it out in unfortunate ways in high school by being a bully to Geoff Allen,” Akilla says. “There is a storyline between the two of them that I can’t give away because of spoilers. But essentially, what seems like tension between me and Geoff becomes something much more beautiful, let’s put it that way.” The cast of Netflix’s October Faction. Netflix Akilla says the tone of October Faction is somewhere between Supernatural and Men in Black: funny, gory and action-packed. “It doesn’t take itself too, too seriously,” he says. “It’s zany, it’s campy in moments. But I think the writers did a great job of balancing the drama and the comedy aspect of it. On the outside, it’s a fun, genre show that has a lot of fantasy horror elements to it. On the inside, it has all sorts of social commentary and well-developed characters.” It’s also Akilla’s first big break as an actor, at least in film and television. The former Sir Winston Churchill high school student has been performing in plays since middle school, eventually carving out a niche for himself as a musical theatre kid. He also tried his hand at acting and producing for film early on. The low-budget action-comedy Jewel Fools, which had Akilla in the starring role and as associate producer, debuted at the Calgary International Film Festival in 2014. But when high school ended, he decided to study chemical engineering at McGill University, which eventually led to him working for Suncor Energy. By day he was a chemical engineer, but by night he was starring in short films with his friends and doing community theatre. Eventually, he decided to make the leap. In 2018, he moved to Vancouver and got an agent. “My first guest spot was on Arrow,” he says. “Which I think is a rite of passage for a lot of Vancouver actors. It’s either that or a Hallmark thing. It was pretty quickly after that, only a few months, when this script came in. I had four or five auditions and a screen test in Toronto and then we started shooting right away. It was right place, right time. I think the character, for some reason I just felt him. I knew who this guy is.” Alongside his work on October Faction, Akilla continued to work in theatre. That included a run as Odysseus in a 2019 Grand Theatre London production of Margaret Atwood’s The Penelopiad under the direction of his October Faction co-star Megan Follows. He returned home in October to star in Nicolas Billon’s Iceland for Theatre Calgary. He is currently rehearsing Cipher for Arts Club in Vancouver, which opens in February, and will appear in Mahabharata later this year at the renowned Shaw Theatre Festival. That production, which opens in August, is an epic retelling on a Sanskrit poem and the first time in North America it has been performed by an all South Asiancast.
Praneet Akilla plays Odysseus in Grand Theatre’s 2019 production of The Penelopiad. Mike Hensen/The London Free Press/Postmedia But Akilla says his first love is film and television, which is what he hopes to focus on in the future. “Part of me just wants to reach out to kids in Calgary that look like me and from families like the one I grew up in; immigrants that come to the city and are raised there and have a path set out for them where they go to school, go to university, get a degree and work in oil and gas,” he says. “It’s going to take other people in their community to do other things off the beaten path to try to inspire the new generation to do that. I carry some responsibility to encourage kids that used to me to follow their passion and thing that makes them tick. It doesn’t have to be acting or anything like that, but I want to reach out to them and let them know that it can be done and has been done for people like me.”RELATED
