SADDLES AND THE HEYE SADDLE In addition to his spurs and rope, few items were as important to a cowboy as his saddle. Riding for any great distance required a fine saddle that could hold up to hard use, exposure to all kinds of weather, and would not harm the horse wearing it. But by the middle of the 1960s, interest in the Western began to wane. Production was scaled back. Critics began to predict the genre’s demise. They said the Westernwas dead.

In 2016, Guerra installed a life-sized sculpture titled The Vaquero in the sculpture garden of the Briscoe Western Art Museum. The commissioned work depicts an early Spanish settler driving two longhorn cows that are yoked together with a rope. Guerra’s research revealed the specific way in which ropes with wooden bobbins were usedto secure

During the early settlement of San Antonio, in the village of La Villita across the river from the Briscoe Museum, Canary Islanders who had gained affluence in Spanish Texas were identified by their elaborate spurs,which
