NEW ROARING LION RECOVERING AT CAMBRIDGE STUD Weekend, 9th August 2019Cambridge Stud has advised that shuttle stallion Roaring Lion (Kitten’s Joy) has returned to the stud farm, following two colic surgeries in a 10-day period. The 2018 Cartier Horse of the Year in Europe (see below), Roaring Lion was admitted to Cambridge Equine Hospital within minutes of arriving at Cambridge from quarantine on Saturday 27 July. He underwent immediate surgery which had to be repeated on Thursday 1 August to repair adhesions which had formed in his small intestine. “Thanks to two world-class surgeons, Dr Alanna Zantingh and Dr Greg Quinn from Waikato Equine and with our own vet Dr Rob Hitchcock assisting, we have managed to save his life and he is on his way to a slow recovery,” said CEO Henry Plumptre. “It has been a complex and challenging environment for everyone involved and we owe a massive debt of gratitude to the veterinary team and the Cambridge Stud staff, led by Marcus Corban, who have ensured his survival. While he has a long road to travel, the beginnings of a recovery are complete and having him back at Cambridge signals the start of the next stage.” Although Roaring Lion’s condition would be described as fragile, due to the two surgeries and resulting weight loss, he is reportedly clinically in good shape – bright, alert and eating well. His recovery is being monitored 24 hours a day and he has done well since his return to Cambridge. Roaring Lion will remain at Cambridge Stud until his departure in December.*
NEW VIRAGE DE FORTUNE SON NOW TWO FOR TWO Weekend, 9th August 2019On Saturday at Rosehill Gardens in Sydney, beautifully bred Godolphin 3YO gelding (Sepoy-Virage De Fortune, by Anabaa) made it two wins from two starts when finishing strongly down the centre of the course in the opening event. In an open looking race after strong fancy Lucicello was scratched, last start Kembla Grange winner Subedar was one of three Godolphin runners, proving too strong for Wimlah and Danawi. He is out of Gr1 QTC Sires Produce Stakes and Gr1 Australia Stakes heroine Virage De Fortune, herself a grand-daughter of champion Emancipation. Subedar’s other three siblings to race are all winners, including Ducatoon Park’s young city-winning stallion Barbados (Redoute’s Choice). SUBEDAR REMAINED UNDEFEATED (PIC: STEVE HART)*
NEW ZOUSTAR STILL THE E-TRAKKA BENCHMARK Weekend, 9th August 2019With the reputation and uptake by trainers of the new E-Trakka XV3 growing strongly, there is one thing that has not changed. Principal Andrew Stuart has revealed that since the first iteration of the powerful training aide, Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes and subsequent boom stallion Zoustar is still the benchmark horse for racing potential and subsequent on-track achievement. "Zoustar's early graphs, even before he raced, showed that he was highly likely to become a future champion. The data that emerged displayed a horse with a rarely seen profile among unraced horses," says Stuart, whose sophisticated real-time database draws on tens of thousands of readings. "E-Trakka really is calling trainers of the future," he enthuses. "Notwithstanding the obvious professionalism of our trainers, it eliminates guess-work surrounding a horse's potential, stride length, fitness level, recovery rate, speed at every point of a work-out and optimum racing distance." Recently relocated to the Gold Coast from Perth due to growing hands-on education for the E-Trakka product, Stuart is excited by the extent of enquiries from new and established trainers alike which currently has him traversing the east coast ofAustralia.

NEW TRSA ANNOUNCES BIG PRIZEMONEY INCREASES Weekend, 9th August 2019South Australia’s thoroughbred racing participants will share in an additional $5.8 million in prizemoney following unprecedented increases announced today by Thoroughbred Racing South Australia (TRSA). The benefits of the new prizemoney levels - which come into effect on 1 September and represent an overall increase of almost 15% on TRSA's total prizemoney distributions - will be felt across the industry with country, provincial and metropolitan grassroots stakes all rising. Highlights of the announcement, where all prizemoney increases have been applied to grassroots racing include: * 69% of the $5.8m prizemoney increases are on Provincial andCountry races
* 88% of thoroughbred's 1439 races will receive increases (of 11% to35%)
* More than 60% of all metropolitan races will now attract $50,000prizemoney:
* $45k races will now grow to $50k * $35k non-Maiden races will increase to $40k * $30k Maiden races will increase to $35k * Provincial races will benefit from increases of up to $5,000 perrace:
* Non-maiden races jump from $15k to $20k * Maidens increase to $17.Sk from $13k * All country Cups will increase from $20,000 to $25,000: * Non-maiden races rise from $12k to $15k * Maidens increase from $10 to $13k*
NEW DELIBERATE STRATEGY BEHIND SA PURSE INCREASES Weekend, 9th August 2019At $5.8 million, the total prizemoney increase (see above item) is more than double TRSA's share of the State Government's racing stimulus announced in the 2019/20 State Budget, with the TRSA Board budgeting for growth from the increased investment in the thoroughbred racing industry. The strategy deliberately puts the prizemoney increases into race meetings that traditionally benefit South Australian racing participants rather than interstate trained horses. TRSA Chair Frances Nelson QC said, "The State Government's budget commitment was recognition of both the significant adverse impact the point of consumption tax has had on racing, and the importance of a sound racing industry to the State. It was a critical first step in terms of restoring confidence in the industry Now, we are taking that to another level with this announcement which is the largest single prizemoney increase in the last decade.” Nelson added, "We have been unapologetically bold in our approach to our budget planning off the back of the Government funding for the next four years. The State Government has shown its faith in the industry; we are responding with a prizemoney commitment of a size and scale that we believe will encourage and stimulate participation at all levels.” Finally, she emphasised, “And we're are backing our industry to respond - because all of us want to make South Australian racing grow and prosper.”*
LATROBE WIN NO GUARANTEE FOR NOVEMBER Weekend, 9th August 2019At Leopardstown in Ireland overnight, Lloyd Williams’ Gr1 Irish Derby winner Latrobe (Camelot) earned his first victory since his Irish Classic triumph when scoring by just under a length in the Gr3 Ballyroan Stakes. Sent to post around even money, Latrobe was ridden by Donnacha O’Brien for his trainer brother Joseph who saddled Rekindling in last year’s Gr1 Melbourne Cup. Kept out of trouble in the first couple throughout the 12 furlong event, Latrobe’s win doesn’t ensure that he will head to Australia, with his trainer noting there are other options in the US, Japan and locally. Now a more season Northern Hemisphere 4YO, Latrobe was withdrawn from the 2018 Melbourne Cup by Williams and saved for the Gr1 McKinnon Stakes instead, where he finished a close runner-up to Trap For Fools over 2000m at weight-for-age.*
TRAP FOR FOOLS SIBLING COULD HEAD TO MELBOURNE Weekend, 9th August 2019Meanwhile, a half-brother to Latrobe’s Mackinnon Stakes conqueror Trap for Fools (see above) could have a future Melbourne campaign. According to _thewest.com.au_, Wednesday’s Belmont Park 1700m maiden winner Too Close The Sun (Carlton House-Old Money by Old Spice) already has dual coast trainer Lindsey Smith eyeing the Melbourne Cup. The original trainer of Trap For Fools, who now has stables at Warrnabool to complement his Perth operation, said after the 4YO gelding’s victory, “It’s clear Too Close The Sun has inherited a lot of family ability. He’s still wayward and can improve vastly. I reckon he can definitely be a Melbourne prospect as soon as we sort out his racing manners.” Smith noted, “Trap For Fools was also green early in his career and lost a Northam race on protest in his debut. But he’s gone on to win a Gr1 Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington and is targeting the next Cox Plate.”*
OFFICIAL OPENING OF NEW SA TRACK Weekend, 9th August 2019Years of toil, months of anticipation and a couple of tantalising teasers will culminate with the Gifford Hill official opening race day at Murray Bridge on Saturday, 10 August. South Australia's new state-of-the-art racetrack and the $20 million Bridges function centre will be formally launched with a standalone metropolitan meeting. The momentous occasion will mark the end of an 11-year journey for the Murray Bridge Racing Club – and the start of an exciting new chapter in the history of the club, the rural city itself, and SA thoroughbred racing in general. The track has been tested twice: initially at the first trials on Wednesday, July 10, and then again at a comparatively low-key midweek meeting on July 24 where trainer Tony McEvoy had a field day. The official unveiling will draw together the main players behind making Gifford Hill a reality, while SA Governor Hieu Van Le and his wife will be special guests. "I can't wait for that first Saturday race meeting," said Thoroughbred Racing SA chief operating office Nick Redin. "Gifford Hill is a key piece of infrastructure in our overall rating system, it's been a long time in the making, but it's going to be great. And I think on opening day we'll see big fields and plenty of interest." The anticipation of a healthy crowd for Gifford Hill's official opening race day is a welcome opportunity to finally put the facility through its paces, according to Murray Bridge Racing Club secretary/manager John Buhagiar. "We anticipate getting good patronage all round, but especially strong support from our local trainers – I know they're excited about racing on the track." Both Redin and Buhagiar predicted opening-day racegoers would be particularly taken by the elevated spectator viewing offered at the new site, situated adjacent the SouthEastern Freeway.

SINK OR SWIM FOR VEGADAZE IN MISSILE Weekend, 9th August 2019In what looms as a father vs son showdown of some interest, Anthony Cummings has decided to throw talented gelding Vegadaze into the metaphorical lion's den this weekend and take on Godolphin prodigy Alizee in the Gr2 $200,000 Missile Stakes, reports _racingnsw.com.au_. Testing the waters with a plethora of spring targets in mind, Cummings is banking on Vegadaze's close-up second to Champion The Autumn Sun in February's Gr2 Hobartville being a barometer to his live chance in The Missile. "If he was to win on Saturday and got the attention of a slot holder in the Everest we wouldn't say no to that. But he has to make that statement first,' noted Cummings. The trainer has also pegged the $7.5 million The Golden Eagle (1500m) on November 2 at Rosehill as a serious option for the highly progressive 4YO gelding. With two solid recent trial performances under his belt, Cummings confirmed the visual with a subtle jibe to the Godolphin camp, " has to be going as well as she looks to beat our horse I'd think." He also commented on likely race tactics for The Missile where Tommy Berry will steer Vegadaze from the outside (gate 5), "In some respects, drawing the outside makes it simpler. He has good gate speed but I'll leave it to Tommy how it works out. I thought he was impressive off the speed in the trial but this race, how do you work it out, I'll make it Tommy's headache not mine. But the horse is there to run well whichever way hegoes."

FRESHMAN SAFEGUARD SECURES WA 2YO HONOURS Weekend, 9th August 2019Darley-bred
stallion Safeguard (Exceed and Excel-Preserve, by Cannly Lad) has claimed the 2018-19 Western Australian 2YO sires' premiership with earnings of $662,930, reports tbwa.net.au. Sharing a common link with Redoute's Choice and I Am Invincible – that of being out of a daughter of Canny Lad – Safeguard becomes the third freshman sire in 10 years to not only top his class, but also take out the juvenile premiership. The other two were Gingerbread Man and Saxon. Standing at Mogumber Park, the Gr3-winning 2YO and 3YO is sire of Specialism who was second in both the G3 WA Sires' Produce Stakes and Crystal Slipper Stakes on top of winning three races at Ascot in Perth. Another of his prominent offspring is Miss West Coast, who also mad a significant contribution to his prizemoney haul with placings in the Gr2 Karrakatta Plate, Gr3 Gimcrack Stakes and Magic Millions 2YO Classic. Standing for $8,800 in 2019, his yearlings at the 2019 Magic Millions Perth Sale averagedclose to $90,000.

PARNHAM RETURNS TO THE SADDLE Weekend, 9th August 2019Injured WA rider Brad Parnham is expected to return to race-riding on Wednesday next week. The high profile hoop suffered a serious fall at Ascot in January 2018 whereafter he underwent surgery to have his spine fused. Despite that medical intervention, racing.com reports as little as four months ago Parnham appeared unlikely to ride again. What seems to have made a significant difference is an intensive three month rehab program which has allowed him to strengthen ligaments that were unstable around his C4 vertebrae. Parnham, who has successfully completed 19 trial rides and won’t be accepting full books, is hastening slowly, saying, I'm in no rush and I've made sure I'm 100 per cent before returning on race day. I'm feeling confident out there, my instincts are back, so I'm excited about my return (at Belmont) next Wednesday." Parnham and his younger jockey brother Chris are sons of principal trainer NevilleParnham.

SANSOM GROWING IN STRENGTH THROUGH WINTER Weekend, 9th August 2019Exciting 3YO gelding Sansom is thriving through his Winter campaign and, if anything, is getting stronger. According to AAP, the Phillips Stokes-trained son of multiple European Gr1 winner Charm Spirit is on a potential streak of four Winter races when he tackles the VRC Membershi Helen Saffir Handicap over 1400m at Flemington on Saturday. In his most recent start, at Sandown over 1300m in late July, Sansom showed a clean pair of heels to his rivals with a dominant win that had Stokes convinced it was time to send him to the paddock. That thought process has changed, with the trainer deciding to push on to another benchmark. Win, lose or draw, it appears likely that Sansom will head for a spell after Saturday – perfect timing as the Stokes stable launches the Spring campaign of talented 4YO Jumbo Ozaki. “There was no reason to put him (Sansom) out. He pulled up well and he's sound," Stokes disclosed. "He's been going through his grades nicely. He goes to the 1400-metre benchmark 70. He's got his share of weight, and then he will have a little break.” Another victory will require Sansom to carry 60.5kg, no easy task against other up-and-comers.*
AWESOME AUCTIONS AT RACING'S NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS Weekend, 9th August 2019While the presentation of annual industry awards is the main objective of the NSW Racehorse Owners Association’s Racing’s Night of Champions, raising money via auction for charity is the another feature of the event, being held next Thursday evening. Partnering for the first time with Spinal Cord Injuries Australia (SCIA), the beneficiary’s relevance has hit home with the many industry participants, who have donated or sourced some fabulous auction entries. Otherwise with the ‘book full’ sign up for 2019, a service (with free return) to Golden Slipper winner, Vancouver (see below), donated by Tommy Berry and Coolmore Australia, is a highlight. Other auction items include: * a handmade gold and diamond ‘racehorse’ pendant * a $10,000 SKY Racing advertising package * a 5 Star luxury holiday in Bali with business class airfares * a McLaren Racing Car track experience * a commissioned equine portrait by Deanne Panya * Lunch with Chris Waller and Hugh Bowman at Bistro Rex A silent auction will run during the night and the live auction, conducted by Greg Radley, commences after the awards. The Racing’s Night of Champions Awards will be televised live to an international audience on Sky Thoroughbred Central by _Sky Racing_, with highlights also being shown across the _Sky Racing_ Platform. Racing’s Night of Champions is being held at Randwick Racecourse at 6.30pm on 15 August 2019 and all are welcome. Tickets are $240pp including dinner, drinks and entertainment. JAPAN LOOKS TO DOUBLE DOWN IN JUDDMONTE Weekend, 9th August 2019Following on from the phenomenal performance of raider Deirdre in taking out the Gr1 Nassau Stakes last week at Goodwood, the Japanese will be aiming to make it two on the trot at the highest level with Cheval Grand set to impose himself at York in the Juddmonte International on August 21, reports _AAP._ Dual Gr1 winner Agnes World is the only other Japanese raider to have won at Gr1 level when collecting the July Cup at Newmarket in 2000. The 2017 Gr1 Japan Cup winner, Coeval Grand is sure to improve on his only other start in the UK when midfield to Champion Enable in the King George. Assistant trainer Yusuke Oe commented on Cheval Grand's progress, " is in very good form. He's training towards York and we're trying to get him better than last time. The ground was too soft for him in the King George. It was very unfortunate that it kept raining from the night before until the afternoon of the race and it was too slippy for him. He is a horse who prefers firm ground."*
SHADAI ACQUIRES BRICKS AND MORTAR BREEDING RIGHTS Weekend, 9th August 2019In further Japanese news, the breeding rights to triple Gr1 winner Bricks and Mortar have been purchased by Teruya Yoshida's Shadai Farm, reports _bloodhorse.com_. Bloodstock Agent Eugenio Colombo announced the deal which will see the talented son of Giant's Causeway continue down what will potentially be an unbeaten path in 2019 en route to the Gr1 Breeders' Cup. He will subsequently be shipped to Japan to commence his stud career. Eugenio commented, "Being by Giant's Causeway is a big positive because he is a sire of sires. Bricks and Mortar is a magnificent individual. With his conformation and his racing ability, he is the full package." The fifth black-type winner from group-placed dam Beyond The Waves (Ocean Crest), Bricks and Mortar was bred by George Strawbridge Jr and consigned by Stone Farm at the 2015 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, where he was purchased for US$200,000 by bloodstock agent Mike Ryan. Bricks and Mortar underlined his world class rating with a 120 score this year by the Longines World's Best Racehorse Rankings, making him the number two US-based horse behind four-time Gr1 winnerMcKinzie.

The timing of the race, on a circuit that is based on Belmont in the US, is highly specific. It will be staged four weeks after the Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park and four weeks prior the Dubai World Cup at Meydan, in an effort to appeal to the world’s leading racehorses.
