Among her published collections of poetry are Color of Steel (1932), Secret Shoes (1939), Strangers on the Stairs (1944), and Autumn Token (posthumously, 1957). This collection contains an extensive body of correspondence, clippings, publications, photographs and other material collected and created by the staff of the Birmingham World, the city’s longest running African American newspaper. Topics include civil rights organizations and their activities, sports, music, education, andpolitics.
BIRMINGHAM PUBLIC LIBRARY In the spring of 2003, members of AGS and other volunteers began a project to index a three-volume set of books shelved at the Birmingham Public Library. They contain a wealth of information about people, places, and events of interest to historians and genealogists. In May of 2005, a consolidated index of all three volumes was completedCOLLECTIONS
AR1944. The Jefferson County Personnel Board was established by an act of the Alabama legislature in 1935. This collection contains minutes of meetings, financial records and scrapbooks of newspaper clippings. The ledgers record routine expenses of the Personnel Board and do not record salaries of public employees. BPL GONE WITH THE WIND: DIGITIAL COLLECTIONS On January 31, 1940, six weeks after its famed Atlanta premiere, David O. Selznik’s Gone with the Wind opened to Birmingham audiences at the Ritz Theatre on 2nd Avenue North.
