Founded in 1807, the Boston Athenæum is one of the oldest and most distinguished independent libraries and cultural institutions in the United States. The Fifth Floor Reading Room is the main reading room. It is a SILENT reading room with tables located in alcoves on either side and down the center of the room. Ralph Inman (1713–1788) was born in Yorkshire, England, and came of America in about 1740. Donna Hassler. Andromeda, Daniel Chester French’s provocative masterpiece in marble, makes for an elusive subject. Sculpted only two years before the artist’s death in 1931, the work has never been exhibited outside of French’s studio at Chesterwood, his summer retreat in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. PAINTINGS & SCULPTURE ONLINE Since the 1820s, the Boston Athenæum has, among other things, functioned as an art museum. In fact, until its own trustees took the lead in founding, in the 1870s, an institution that would eventually dedicate itself to the fine arts in Boston, the Athenæum single-handedly filled that role in the city.
