Welcome. _BirdAndHike.com_ is intended to encourage people to visit, learn about, and fall in love with the desert. While more people in the desert isn't necessarily good, more people who love and respect the desert is good. Get out there and see for yourself. _BirdandHike.com is your best source of information about birding and hiking around Las Vegas!_ HIKING IN THESE DARK DAYS OF COVID-19 As we adjust to the realities of social distancing and the closure of popular hiking areas, many of us still want to follow our governor's suggestion to stay healthy by exercising outside. We also want to protect our mental health by seeking the solace of our shared public lands. Considering our options, however, we find that many of our familiar hiking areas are closed, and so we need to consider newareas.
First, wherever you go, be sure to maintain social distancing because this is the only way we can slow the spread of the virus. Drive your own car, space out on the trail, and wash up when you get home. Also consider that emergency response will be slower than usual, plus an injury might require a hospital stay -- and everyone needs to stay away from hospitals these days! Second, practice your Leave No Trace skills. Most unpopular hiking areas have no trash pickup or restrooms. Third, choose carefully where to go: * For people unfamiliar with hiking alone, consider visiting Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument . This area spreads across the north edge of urban Las Vegas. There are no trails, but people can hike forever while staying in view of the urban area. No worries about getting lost, plus cell service is good. Sloan Canyon on the south side of the Las Vegas Valley, has several nice trails starting from Henderson neighborhoods. Consider downloading the Neon to Natureapp and find lots
of urban and local wildlands trails. * Mt. Charleston area. Stay away from the crowded areas at the higher elevations. Instead, when driving up Kyle Canyon Road or especially Lee Canyon Road, just stop at any dirt road and walk away from the pavement. Dirt roads make good trails because you can turn around and find your way back, plus roads are wide enough for a parent and a child to walk side-by-side whileholding hands.
* For adventuresome hikers, head to the hinterlands. Most of Nevada is public land, and there are places to find where you can camp for weeks without seeing another human. Find your own hike in Gold Butte, Basin and Range
, or one of our
Wilderness Areas .
