WRITE EFFORT: CREATIVE WRITING THROUGH A BUDDHIST LENS WITH NOELALUMIT
Saturdays May 23 - Jun 27, 20202:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Write Effort, creative writing through a Buddhist lens, grew out of Noel Alumit’s studies in Buddhist divinity school. Write Effort is a play on words referring to Right Effort, the sixth of the Noble Eightfold Path. By using Buddhist concepts (precepts, meditation, Four Noble Truths), Noel addresses the creative process of storytelling: character development, plot, conflict, dialogue, structure. In this workshop, we will be playful with words before we will delve deep into your subconscious. Whether you are a beginning writer or a professional, it will get your pen moving! Noel Alumit received his BFA in Drama at USC and his Master of Divinity in Buddhist chaplaincy at UWEST. He was ordained through the International Center for Chinese Buddhist Culture and Education. He wrote the novels Letters to Montgomery Clift and Talking to the Moon, a Los Angeles Times Bestseller. His work has also been in the LA Review of Books, USA Today, Best American Gay Short Stories, McSweeney’s and many others. He has taught creative writing for UCLA Extension’s Writers Program since 2005. Noel facilitates meditation groups in Los Angeles and has been a literary host at Skylight Books in Los Feliz for nearly 20 years. ------------------------- DEEPENING YOUR CHARACTERS: A WORKSHOP WITH LEON MARTELL Tuesdays, June 2 - July 287:30 PM - 10:00 PM

FLOATING WORLDS
VISIT ONLINE EXHIBITION HERE Sugimaru, Progress, 2019, Gouache on paper _Floating Worlds_ is a survey of new contemporary art from Japan, alongside American artists who have Japanese and Asian roots or have created work that speaks to our theme. While “floating worlds” is a phrase art historically connected to Ukiyo-e art from Japan from around 1630 - the mid 1800s, we are using it here to refer to the major changes happening in the world we live in - the fleeting, floating nature of life - and the way artists depict this challenge. Indeed, the period when this phrase was used in Japan was one of tremendous upheaval, and our exhibition coincides with this fact of life. Whether sublime or active, contemplative or extroverted, this exhibition speaks to our times directly. Japanese artists in the show - rarely seen in the US - are Yoko Umemoto, Motoko Oyamada, Sugimuru, Akira Nakamura, Kumiko Suzuki, and MIchiko. American artists are Juri Koll, MB Boissonnault, and othersto be announced.
