ARE THE DEER TO BLAME? Blacklegged ticks, both the Western and Eastern varieties, are often known as “deer ticks” Does that mean deer are to blame for the spread of Lyme disease? Perhaps surprisingly, the answer is not obvious. While deer are a common host animal for the ticks (and can carry as many as 1000 ticks per animal!), they do not support the Lyme-causing spirochete (Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria).LYME DISEASE
Quiet Epidemic. Lyme disease is the fastest growing vector-borne illness in the US. The CDC has announced that the number of people diagnosed each year with Lyme disease has climbed to nearly half a million, specifically 476,000, which is a jump of 59% over the 300,000 estimate previously listed on the CDC’s website. This is based on new research in two studies in the publication Emerging ABOUT US | BAY AREA LYME FOUNDATION Our Mission . At Bay Area Lyme, our mission is to make Lyme disease easy to diagnose and simple to cure. Bay Area Lyme Foundation is a national, 501c3 non-profit organization based in Silicon Valley and collaborates with world-class scientists and institutions to WHAT CAUSES LYME DISEASE? Borrelia Burgdorferi. Lyme disease is an infection caused by several strains of the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi (Bb). The bacteria is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected tick. These ticks can also transmit other diseases and infect pets and livestock. The tick that transmits Lyme is so small you may not notice it.OUR RESEARCH
At Bay Area Lyme, we have a rigorous screening and monitoring process, grant oversight, and project reporting, to ensure that projects are effectively designed, carried out in a timely fashion, and funds well spent. Our Lyme disease research has three primary areas of focus: Diagnostics—leveraging new technologies and methodologies to improve LYME DISEASE FACTS AND STATISTICS The CDC has announced that the number of people diagnosed each year with Lyme disease has climbed to nearly half a million, specifically 476,000, which is a jump of 59% over the 300,000 estimate previously listed on the CDC’s website. BLACKLEGGED TICK
Blacklegged ticks (the eastern version, Ixodes scapularis also known as “deer ticks,” and the related western version Ixodes pacificus) are much smaller than dog ticks and are responsible for transmitting many bacterial diseases such as Lyme disease, Babesiosis, Ehrlichiosis, and Anaplasmosis (also see Other Tick-Borne Diseases formore information).

Scientific Advisory Board Member Many, many thanks for your program research. I was one of the senders of a tick to your free testing program. As a Chronic Lyme sufferer, it is heartening to know there are research programs as yours that are on the battlefront of understanding Lyme, its co-infections and providing information to the public of this epidemic.Charles Youmans
