GET READY FOR SCHOOL! STORY TIME! - A RIDE TO REMEMBER: A CIVIL RIGHTS STORY Saturday, January 11, 2020 - 10:30am As Martin Luther King, Jr., Day approaches, join illustrator Floyd Cooper and Amy Nathan, co-author with Sharon Langley of _A Ride to Remember_, to hear this picture book’s true story of how a ride on a carousel made a powerful Civil Rights statement. On August 28, 1963, Sharon, then 11-months-old, was the first black child to go on a ride at a newly desegregated Baltimore amusement park. That same day, Dr. King gave his “I Have a Dream” speech in Washington. Newspapers reported on her ride as an example that showed the possibilities of his dream. In the book, Sharon’s parents answer her questions as a six-year-old about why the park had been segregated and how people—kids included—helped end discrimination there. The carousel she rode is now in DC, near where Dr. King gave his speech. Floyd Cooper will show how he used an eraser to create the art for the book, followed by an art activity for youngsters up to around 8 yearsold!
