Backyard Brains enables everyone to be a neuroscientist! We provide affordable neuroscience experiment kits for students of all ages to learn (hands-on) about electrophysiology. Now everyone from schoolchildren to grad students and every grade in between can experiment with similar tools used by real neuroscientists worldwide!BYB SPIKE RECORDER
Recording Spikes. Using our DVR-esque interface, you will never miss a spike! The software is always recording in the background, so you can play back that response you just saw in real-time. Need to save it for later so you can show your friends? You can record the data directlyin our app.

BACKYARD BRAINS
Call for HS Teachers and Undergraduates in Biology, Engineering and the Arts: Calling all AI and neuroscience nerds (AND nerd wannabes): We are back!. After taking a hiatus due to a global pandemic, we are proud to announce that we are returning with a very special guest star: TinyML! Tiny Machine Learning (TinyML) is a deep learning toolkit made for tinkers, educators and for those who wantTHE PLANT SPIKERBOX
84. Our Plant Spikerbox allows you to perform data-driven experiments between various species of plants! This easy-to-use device records and visualizes the signals emitted by plants, offering users the unique opportunity to peer into the fascinating world of plant signaling and plant behaviors. Order today and start experimenting in your home EXPERIMENT: HOW YOUR EYE DETECTS COLOR AND MOTION Background. Light is the key to vision. The photons emitted from a light source bounce off of objects and eventually hit you in the eye! When a photon reaches your eye it passes through the transparent cornea and then through the lens which refracts and focuses the light onto your retina, where the light is selectively detected and absorbed by special photoreceptor cells: the rods and cones. FLEXION AND EXTENSION: RECORD YOUR ANTAGONISTIC MUSCLES Flexion and Extension: Record Your Antagonistic Muscles. Now that you've completed the "Getting Started with the Muscle Spikerbox" experiment, you've learned about muscle physiology through viewing electromyograms (EMGs) of your own muscles. More specifically, you've observed the electrical impulses that muscles fibers create to cause a contraction of a muscle. EXPERIMENT: CELLULAR MICROSCOPY-BLOOD CELLS Thoroughly scrub the skin of one fingertip with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol. Open a lancet to expose the sharp point (about 3 mm long). Quickly puncture the cleaned fingertip, put the lancet down, and gently squeeze the finger until a small drop of blood forms on thefingertip.

ABOUT BACKYARD BRAINS So they endeavored to fix that. Founding Backyard Brains (BYB) in 2009, Tim and Greg used off-the-shelf electronics and readily-available products to create kits that would let kids learn about neuroscience at an earlier age. The first Spikerbox was born, a hand-held device able to provide insight into the inner workings ofthe nervous system
EXPERIMENT: HOW FAST YOUR BRAIN REACTS TO STIMULI The first test will use one ruler, while the second test will use two. Experiment 1: In this phase you and your partner will test visual, auditory, and tactile reaction times using one ruler. Have your friend sit at a table with their dominant hand over the edge. First we will test visual response. EXPERIMENT: BUILD AND CONTROL YOUR OWN DIY NEUROPROSTHETIC Experiment: Build and Control your own DIY Neuroprosthetic: a Cyborg Hand! Participate in the cutting-edge of biomedical engineering! Build your own DIY prosthetic hand with articulating fingers, then use the Muscle SpikerShield to take control of your new cybernetic creation! BOX OF 3 COCKROACHES Cockroach Specs. Each box ships with 3 cockroaches, packed with warmers in winter months. Non-Pest Insects: these are exotic South American roaches that do not thrive without proper care--no worries about escapees taking over your home or school. Length: 1-2". Average Lifespan: 2.5 years. BACKGROUND: TRANSISTOR THEORY Background. Modern computing and electronics are built upon the transistor, making it in our opinion the most important invention of the 20th century. Transistors are used as switches (devices telling signals where to go) or amplifiers (devices transforming "small" signals into bigger ones), and these two functions are what make yourfavorite
EXPERIMENT: TRANSISTOR CIRCUIT DESIGN Experiment: Transistor Circuit Design. You can now explain with confidence what p-doping, n-doping, and depletion layers mean. Now you will put that knowledge to use. You have the transistor in your hand. You stare at it, knowing the power it contains and what it has done for the world. Here you will use your transistor to amplify somespikes.
EXPERIMENT: EMGS DURING MUSCLE FATIGUE Isometric biceps hold. Hook up your EMG patch electrodes to your bicep, plug the electrodes into your Muscle SpikerBox, and hook up your SpikerBox to either your mobile software or PC. Select a dumbbell that is at about 60% of your maximum lifting weight. Depending on EXPERIMENT: RECORDING THE MUSCLES OF CLAMS Turn the Muscle SpikerPro on, and a USB icon will appear in the upper left screen. Click the USB icon to connect to your Muscle SpikerBox Pro. Now lightly tap lightly on different parts of the remaining shell. You should see the EMG spikes of the adductor musclesresponding to the
EXPERIMENT: EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE ON NEURONS As the temperature slowly rises, you should hear the neurons responding, and at a certain temperature, you will hear a very low "scream" of spikes as all the neurons discharge. Record the temperature at which this happens, and exhaust the candle. When the leg gets back to room temperature, test to see if the spikes comeback.
EXPERIMENT: RECORD AND MANIPULATE LIVE NEURONS! Remove the cockroach from the ice water, and with a tug on the femur, pull off one of its legs. Don't worry, the leg is designed to break easily at this joint (like the tail of a lizard) and will grow back to full size within 125 days.Note: we used to say "cut the leg" but have since found pulling the leg makes the cockroach regenerate the legfaster.

WELCOME TO BACKYARD BRAINS Want to understand more about how the brain works? Now you can bring the world of Neuroscience to your classroom and home. * WHY STUDY THE BRAIN* WHAT YOU CAN DO
* HOW IT WORKS
The brain is complex, but extremely fascinating. We need more people interested in studying the brain because 1 in 5 people are likely to develop a neurological disorder... and there are no cures! To study the brain, you typically have to be a graduate student at a major university. Not any more! Backyard Brains enables everyone to be a neuroscientist! We provide affordable neuroscience experiment kits for students of all ages to learn (hands-on) about electrophysiology. Now everyone from schoolchildren to grad students and every grade in between can experiment with similar tools used by real neuroscientists worldwide! By following a few simple steps, everyone can experience first-hand how the brain communicates with our senses, memories,hopes, and desires.
