AVILA UNIVERSITY CELEBRATES 70TH ANNIVERSARY OF NURSING PROGRAM WITH THE GOLD FOUNDATION WHITE COAT CEREMONY One of oldest baccalaureate programs of nursing in the Kansas City region, the Avila School of Nursing celebrates 70 years as it admits students to the nursing class of 2020. This fall, junior nursing students participated in a formal commitment ceremony pledging an oath of providing compassionate patient care as a future health care provider. In celebration of 70 years of nursing at Avila and in partnership with the Gold Foundation, 51 nursing students walked across the Jean and Bill Buchanan Stage inside Goppert Theatre to be recognized in front of family, friends and fellow nursing students.*
FIRST YEAR STUDENTS TAKE COMMUNITY PLUNGE PACKING 12,500 MEALS Each year Avila University first-year students spend one of their first days on campus volunteering in the community to give back and build bonds. This year around 180 Avila students spent a day at Harvesters community food network packing 76,122 total lbs. of product which is the equivalent of about 12,500 meals. "I love the good it does the community and the bonding with the other incoming classmates," said Tumi Musamali, a freshman from Kansas City, Missouri. "I can't wait to come back."*

Chloe Casey, a junior at Avila University, was one of a select group of 10 college students from across the United States participating in the National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program at Rutgers University‒Camden thissummer.
For 10 weeks, Casey worked alongside faculty and graduate-student mentors in the Center for Computational and Integrative Biology. From hands-on lab work to the potential for publishing research papers, Casey's research provided her a head start on STEM learning experiences that many students won't begin until graduate school.*
