Fragile X syndrome (also known as Martin-Bell syndrome) is a sex-linked genetic disorder. The exact frequency of Fragile X syndrome is unclear, but the CDC estimates that roughly 1.4 in 10,000 males and 0.9 in 10,000 females are affected by this disorder. Males afflicted with this syndrome typically have a moderate to severe form of intellectual handicap. An individual with autism may self-injure as a way to increase or decrease their level of arousal. Often, self-injury is a learned behavior. Parents certainly don’t intend to teach children to engage in self-injury, but they may unintentionally reinforce the behaviors. AGING IN AUTISM: A CALL TO ACTION The 2013 U.S. census reports 63 million people who are age 60 and older. This would amount to 31,500 seniors with autism in the U.S. Using a less conservative statistical approach, if one assumes that the prevalence rate of autism has always been 1 in 68, this wouldtotal to 926,500.
