ELEMENT OF AN EPIC #1: A VAST SETTING Element of an Epic #1: A Vast Setting. Among the Top 5 Elements of a Great Epic, setting is at the top of my list. Great stories, of course, can take place in a very limited setting. Stephen King’s The Mist, which largely takes place in a convenience store, and Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend, which primarily takes place in theprotagonist
STORY STRUCTURE & THE WORLD OF HARRY POTTER According to Snyder, this is the opening scene that sets the mood and tone for the story. In the series, this is the first chapter of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, which opens with a scene set at the Dursley residence, Number Four Privet Drive.“You-Know-Who” has been killed and the mysterious Dumbledore appears with Professor McGonagall and Hagrid on his flying motorcycle THE PLOT HOLE THAT SWALLOWED “THE MAZE RUNNER” The Maze Runner was a fun film set in a dystopian future where a group of teenage boys and ultimately one girl find themselves trapped in a place called the Glade that is surrounded by a titanic wall that leads to a mysterious and dangerous maze. The maze runners are members of the “Gladers” brave enough to explore the maze and search for a way out, all the while dodging these cyborg-like WAS ROBERT THE BRUCE REALLY A TRAITOR, AND DOES IT MATTER Does Robert the Bruce look like a traitor? HISTORICAL FICTION: "THE EVENING AND THE MORNING" BY KEN The Evening And The Morning tells the tale of how the fictional town of Kingsbridge came to be. Many of the novels’ elements are similar to those in The Pillars Of The Earth and World Without End, including several of the heroes and villains. But what makes each book in the series different is the period in which they are set. “THE FLAME BEARER”: UHTRED OF BEBBANBURG FINALLY GOES HOME For ten novels – that’s right, ten – we’ve been waiting for Uhtred to reclaim his ancestral home of Bebbanburg, and in The Flame Bearer we finally learn how that story ends. Fans of the series will recall that Uhtred’s last attempt to capture the impregnable Northumbrian fortress took place in The Pagan Lord, where we were introduced to his son Uhtred as a young warrior. ANOTHER VIKING TALE: "WAR OF THE WOLF" BY BERNARD CORNWELL War of the Wolf is another solid entry in the Saxon Tales series. With his main character, Uhtred, having finally captured his ancestral home of Bebbanburg, I thought the series might have ended with the previous novel, The Flame Bearer. But now I’ve realized, this series is not so much Uhtred’s tale as it is the story of how a united kingdom of England (called “Englaland” in Uhtred’s "THE STAND" WAS AN UNFORTUNATE MESS The Stand miniseries wrapped up last week with the series’ best episode, in my opinion. The episode was an extended epilogue written by Stephen King for the show. It ties to the book’s epilogue, but it’s really a story about Fran Goldsmith and how she finally had tomake a stand.

This is the third book on Norse mythology I’ve read, and it easily ranks as one of my favorites. HAPPY SAINT PATRICK'S DAY! Season 3 of Westworld hit its midpoint with last Sunday’s episode, titled “Mother of Exiles.” It was the season’s best episode yet, and it ended with a mind-blowing twist. IT'S ALL ABOUT CHAOS THEORY ON WESTWORLD The Outlier. As I’ve mentioned before, Michael Crichton’s Westworld was the precursor to his bestselling novel Jurassic Park. Both were based on chaos theory — a notion that no matter how one tries to control a complex system, there are certain things that are impossible to contain or predict.SAINT PATRICK
Saint Patrick’s Day is one of my all-time favorite holidays, but this year, the parties have been canceled as we do our part to slow the spread of the coronavirus.Times like this are also a reminder that the real story of Saint Patrick is not about drinking and revelry. And while we don’t learn too many new facts, the plot thickens in Westworld by the episode’s end. THREE THOUGHTS AFTER "A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS The second episode of the final season of Game of Thrones, titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” could very well have been titled “the Night Before Everyone Dies.” Because I fear the cast of characters we’ve grown to love is about to be thinned out dramatically. I cannot recommend this book more strongly to anyone of Irish descent or who’s even remotely interested in the amazing role the Irish played in Western civilization’s survival during the ANOTHER VIKING TALE: "WAR OF THE WOLF" BY BERNARD CORNWELL War of the Wolf is another solid entry in the Saxon Tales series. With his main character, Uhtred, having finally captured his ancestral home of Bebbanburg, I thought the series might have ended with the previous novel, The Flame Bearer. But now I’ve realized, this series is not so much Uhtred’s tale as it is the story of how a united kingdom of England (called “Englaland” in Uhtred’s “THE FLAME BEARER”: UHTRED OF BEBBANBURG FINALLY GOES HOME For ten novels – that’s right, ten – we’ve been waiting for Uhtred to reclaim his ancestral home of Bebbanburg, and in The Flame Bearer we finally learn how that story ends. Fans of the series will recall that Uhtred’s last attempt to capture the impregnable Northumbrian fortress took place in The Pagan Lord, where we were introduced to his son Uhtred as a young warrior. STORY STRUCTURE & THE WORLD OF HARRY POTTER According to Snyder, this is the opening scene that sets the mood and tone for the story. "THE STAND" WAS AN UNFORTUNATE MESS The Stand miniseries wrapped up last week with the series’ best episode, in my opinion. The episode was an extended epilogue written by Stephen King for the show. It ties to the book’s epilogue, but it’s really a story about Fran Goldsmith and how she finally had tomake a stand.
SAINT PATRICK
Saint Patrick’s Day is one of my all-time favorite holidays, but this year, the parties have been canceled as we do our part to slow the spread of the coronavirus.Times like this are also a reminder that the real story of Saint Patrick is not about drinking and revelry. It’s the story about a man who went from a slave to become a bishop and helped save civilization. VINTAGE FANTASY: "SWORDS AND DEVILTRY" BY FRITZ LEIBER My e-book Version. The Snow Women was my favorite of the three tales, but you have to persevere to get to the meat of the story. Unfortunately, it begins with five pages of exposition. That might have worked in 1970, but not today. But if you soldier on, you’ll find a tale of a young man suddenly torn between his duties to the clan, the woman he’s to marry, and an exotic actress who THE PLOT THICKENS IN WESTWORLD. The latest episode of Westworld, titled “The Winter Line,” was all about Maeve. She’s long been my favorite character on the show, so I loved this one. And while we don’t learn too many new facts, the plot thickens in Westworld by the episode’s end. REVIEW: "STORM GLASS" BY JEFF WHEELER Review. Imagine a world that is part Oliver Twist and part Downton Abbey, with a heaping of magic and a slight Steampunk vibe, and you’ll begin to get a feel for the world of Storm Glass. It’s one of those novels where the setting is as important as its characters, and the story world, founded on a form of magic called the “mysteries,” has already drawn me to the second book in theseries.
GAME OF THRONES WAS MEANT TO BE A TRAGEDY Jon Was A Tragic Hero Too. Jon Snow has always struggled between love and duty. His duty toward the Night’s Watch ultimately led to the death of his love, Ygritte. Back in season one, Maester Aemon warns Jon that “Love is the death of duty.”. In the finale, Tyrion turns that saying around, telling Jon that “Duty is the death of love.”. WHAT IS THE BOOK OF LEAVES? The Book of Leaves is the object at the center of the show’s biggest mystery. Last season, in the bowels of Castel Sant’Angelo, where the pope keeps his hidden treasures,* we witnessed one of its pages. The page is written in an alien language that Leonardo has never seen, but with the wave of the pope’s hand, the writing magically AN AMUSING INTERVIEW WITH SMAUG! It’s hard to find time in December to get anything done, and with a busy work week, it’s been near impossible. That said, I found a few minutes to post a link to this amusing interview of Smaug by Stephen Colbert (you can see it here).I’m off this week for the holidays, but promise to
