Australian Chronicle This web site is under construction. The first authenticated discovery of Australia was made by theDutch in 1606!
On an exploration expedition organised by the Dutch East India Company, and in a small pinnace named the _Duyfken_, Dutch sea captain Willem Janszoon left Bantam and headed straight down the south coast of New Guinea (probably testing the rumour there was gold to befound).
In 1611, the Dutch had discovered a new sailing route to theIndies.
Instead of creeping around the coast of Africa and crossing to India, or striking across from Madagascar, Captain Brouwer made use of the prevailing westerly winds to sail eastwards over 6,500 kilometres before turning north for Java. European explorers had already made rough charts of some of the Australian coastline leading to speculation that a ‘Great SouthernLand’ existed.
FREDERIC DE HOUTMAN was a Dutch sea captain instructed by the Dutch East India Company to follow up Dirk Hartog's reports of an unknown continent whilst on route to Java. In 1622, company of the ship Leeuwin sighted the south west corner of Australia and it was realized that from that point on the coasttrended eastwards.
They described the land they found as low-lying, sandy dunes and gave it the name 'Leeuwin Land'. A few months later forty six men reached Batavia in open boats, the survivors of an English ship the _Tryal_ which had been wrecked on some rocks in Latitude 20ºS and in longitude due south of the east end of Java. The Dutch East India Company had already spent countless dollars in their rush to open up the new world and to find goods of all descriptions for trade. In 1623, Dutch Explorer Jan Carstensz, with fellow explorer Van Colster, was sent by Herman van Speult, the Governor of Amroyna to sail 2 ships _Arnhem_ and _Pera_ and check up on the unfavourable reports of earlier explorer Willem Janszoon, and to search for gold on the south coast of New Guinea.MORE: 1 2 3
