TOURISM AND NON GOVERNMENTAL ACTIVITIES Commercial tourism using both ships and aircraft has increased steadily since the first commercial expeditions in the 1950s. The total number of tourists visiting Antarctica in WASTE DISPOSAL AND MANAGEMENT Annex III to the Environment Protocol requires that "the amount of wastes produced or disposed of in the Antarctic Treaty area shall be reduced as far as practicable so as to minimize impacts on the Antarctic environment and to minimize interference with the natural values of Antarctica, with the scientific research and with other uses of Antarctica which are consistent with the Antarctic ABOUT | ANTARCTIC TREATY The Secretariat of the Antarctic Treaty is located in downtown Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 1964, the ATCM adopted Agreed Measures for the Conservation of ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT One of the environmental principles enshrined in Article 3 of the Environment Protocol is that "activities in the Antarctic Treaty area shall be planned and conducted on the basis of information sufficient to allow prior assessments of, and informed judgments about, their possible impacts on the Antarctic environment and dependent and associated ecosystems and on the value of Antarctica forRELATED AGREEMENTS
Related Agreements. The related agreements making up the system are: The Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty (Madrid, 1991); The Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Seals (CCAS, London, 1972); The Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR, Canberra, 1980); Although CCAS and CCAMLR are independent agreements, they contain THE COMMITTEE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION The Committee for Environmental Protection. The Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP) was established by Article 11 of the Environment Protocol. The aim of these guidelines is to provide specific instructions on the conduct of activities at the most frequently visited Antarctic sites. This includes practical guidance for tour operators and guides on how they should conduct visits in those sites, taking into account their environmental values andsensitivities.
