ROOF TURBINE VENTS
A small 12-inch-diameter turbine vent with a constant wind speed of 5 miles per hour (mph) can remove 347 cubic feet of air per minute (cfm) from the attic space. A single 14-inch-diameter turbine vent that is subjected to 15 mph winds can expel up to 1,342 cfm of air! FLAGSTONE MORTAR MIX Keep Flagstone Mortar Mix Materials Warm. If at all possible, keep the sand, cement, and hydrated lime indoors at room temperature and only bring it outdoors to mix it. Use very warm or hot water to mix the mortar. Try to heat the brick or flagstone as well although this may be far more difficult to accomplish. SOLVING POCKET DOOR PROBLEMS Solution: Check to see if there is 3/16th-inch clearance between each side of the door and each jamb. If you have this clearance and the door still rubs, the door may be warped and/or the entire pocket door assembly may be twisted. CHECK FOR CROWNS IN LUMBER You measure the amount of crown by snapping a chalk line from the two ends of the floor joist along the wide flat face of the lumber. The chalk line, when stretched tightly, represents a perfectly straight line between the two top ends of the joist. The lumber that exists above the chalk line is MOLD AND MILDEW ON LUMBER Many homeowners experience mold and mildew on their lumber as houses are built or room additions are constructed. The good news is the lumber is going to be fine and there's rarely any damage to the wood. If it's just surface mold or mildew, it will clean off. THICKNESS OF POURED CONCRETE FOUNDATION WALLS Poured concrete foundation walls that are less than 8 feet tall and have soil outside that is 6 or 7 feet deep against the wall can often be 8 inches thick and function quite well. As soon as you go higher or have greater depths of soil pushing against the wall, you need to increase the thickness to 10 inches. A flashing is a transitional roofing material that connects the roof material to some other building material or to another part of the roof. In your case, your valley may have a metal valley flashing or even a granular MULCH AGAINST FOUNDATION The best way to prevent all these issues is to keep the top of the foundation at least 18 inches above grade. You can even go up as much as 24 inches. Creative planning then can make it so there are minimal steps to get up into the home. As for as how much mulch one should put up against a house foundation, I say use the minimal amount. TREATED LUMBER CRACKING Treated lumber cracking happens because water soaks into the wood. The wood swells creating stress within the wood's cellular structure. When the water evaporates, the wood shrinks. This movement causes tension forces that start to tear the lumber apart. The cracks you see are the visible signs of this tearing apart of the wood fibers. YOU CAN REPAIR STUCCO WALL Repair Stucco Wall - Why It Failed. My wife and I are the head ushers at our church. HOW TO DRILL CERAMIC TILE The lowest tile drill bit speed possible, say 100 or 200 revolutions per minute, is perfect to drill standard ceramic tile. Apply moderate even pressure to the drill so the bit grinds away at the glaze or the tile. If you drill fast, you'll overheat the drill bit and ruin it. OIL BASED VS WATER BASED PAINT If so, stick with an oil based one. They resist chemicals better, usually have a higher gloss, they do not raise wood grain, and are almost always more durable than water based urethanes. If you want the ease of rinsing your brush in water or want a non-yellowing film, you will not get long term performance. The choice is yours to make. MOLD AND MILDEW ON LUMBER Many homeowners experience mold and mildew on their lumber as houses are built or room additions are constructed. The good news is the lumber is going to be fine and there's rarely any damage to the wood. If it's just surface mold or mildew, it will clean off. ATTIC INSULATION BATTS OR BLOWN IN Attic insulation batts or blown-in is a common question. Batts tend to insulate better, but blown-in is often cheaper. There are hidden DANGERS.
