RESIDENCIES
residencies in the U.S. provide an estimated $40 million in support to artists annually. 70% are multidisciplinary, serving visual artists, writers, composers, filmmakers, choreographers, and others. 60% are in rural areas and small towns, while 40% are in urban areas. 90% have public programs that engage the local community. ARTIST RESIDENCIES + DANCE The findings of this project are compiled in the Alliance's report, " Mind the Gap: Artist Residencies and Dance ," published in April 2011. Rather than the end product, the study is just one critical phase in this project, and we look forward to our ongoing work to support today’s dancemakers in STARTING A RESIDENCY PROGRAM Artists' residencies provide time and space for artists and other creative individuals to work. Artists are selected through a competitive process for a "temporary" place in the community -- length of residency varies from one week to several years. Artists communities' can include housing, or be studio-only programs; they cansupport a single

APPLYING FOR RESIDENCIES Articulate Your Interest in This Residency: Some applications ask for a statement of intent, a project proposal, or an artist statement. This is a great opportunity to demonstrate that you have done your homework and know why this particular residency is of interest to you. Perhaps you are drawn to its location, its history, its technical PREPARING FOR A RESIDENCY Documentation should be done by a professional, whenever possible. The quality of your materials reflects the quality of your work. It is also important that your documentation is in an appropriate format (eg, slides vs. digital photos; cassettes or DATs vs. CDs). Most residency programs make clear in their guidelines what format youshould use.
EMERGENCY RELIEF PROGRAMS Emergency grants of up to $1,000 are available for eligible artists. In order to be eligible for emergency assistance an applicant must: Have been accepted and scheduled to participate in a residency program that is an Organizational Member of the Alliance of ArtistsCommunities.
