We have always had a mission to make a difference by doing and showing versus talking and telling. That means doing through art, design, and thoughtful, sustainable business partnerships: bringing the Lao craft of upcycling bomb shrapnel and other scrap aluminum into spoons to the global market as a line of jewelry. Today, that jewelry is worn and shared across the world and has contributed to @minesadvisorygroup to clear thousands of UXO from 400,000 m2 of land. Consider giving a meaningful gift to your father for #fathersday and let him know the impact it makes. Our coin wrap is one of our first pieces and is engraved with a conversation starting story - #droppedandmadeinlaos.__
@theryannrichardson: "Understandably, in the last week, my timelines have been flooded with posts lamenting what it is to be Black: “exhausting”, “terrifying”... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Some understand our shared, cyclical pain as simply inherent in being Black. They’re wrong. They have to be. And I have to reject any implication that the essence of Blackness itself is suffering. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ To be Black is to inherit the strength of the most resilient people the world has ever known. It’s not just to stand on the shoulders of giants, but to dance in their indelible footprints. It is to carry within you the spirit of creators... who given nothing but the most meager of scraps somehow still produced the most profound masterpieces. It is to be the lifeblood of this nation and the very foundation on which it is built. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Our Blackness smells like cocoa butter, incense... It sounds like 808s echoing the beat of talking drums echoing the beat of our warrior ancestors' hearts. It feels like fresh linen on Summer-sun-kissed skin. Like the warm embrace of your mother, and her mother, and her mother’s mother all at once. Blackness is the sweetest thing I’ve ever known. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So while I am weary and angry and dejected, for that I will never demean my Blackness. Because being Black is not painful. Being Black is not exhausting. It is not a constant emotional war. This, all of it, isn’t about Blackness at all..." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Read the rest at bit.ly/RYANNBLM _____ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ARTICLE22 has always been on a mission to make a difference by doing and showing versus talking and telling. Context matters. The statement above was made by Fred Branfman to me in 2010. As a young expat teacher living in Laos in the 1960s, he discovered and reported to an unwitting US Congress the clandestine bombing of Laos during the Vietnam War (1964-1973) - now known as the Secret War. In Laos, they call it the American War. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The US was secretly bombing Laos and killing innocent civilians despite a treaty that committed to the country’s neutrality. Unlike Fred who discovered the indiscriminate killing of Lao families as it was happening, I learned about it 40+ years later when I lived in Laos. And then, about the unfathomable legacy of 80 million unexploded bombs (aka UXO) still contaminating the land today. I was shocked. The Secret War and UXO aftermath had not been covered in the history books that I had read. So like Fred, I suddenly felt like what I had learned about my beloved, imperfect country wasn’t true. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Facts are critical. First hand accounts of the same event, told from multiple perspectives are critical. Now. At this moment in time, I’m thankful to have the opportunity through social media to be listening. To hear friends, collaborators, and strangers, first hand, talk about hard issues, share what they are doing, and ultimately, take part in writing history. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I am hopeful that the way people are living history right now will be reflected in how and by whom that history is written - with accuracy, intersectionality, inclusivity. I hope those future history books will show marked progress from where we are today. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In the meantime, less talking and telling and more listening and doing - donating, challenging power structures that deny voices and experiences of black people, and advocating for ending police brutality. History is now. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ xx Elizabeth Powered by InstaPics×
