WHAT IS SHOCK ART?
What is Shock Art? One would imagine that any visit to a gallery, one of the bastions of the art world, is an encounter with the aesthetic from which one emerges enlightened. The word ‘art’ itself has its associations with beauty and craftsmanship, and rightly so, given the oft-touted examples of aesthetic achievement like the Mona Lisa or THE MAKING OF ART APART FAIR: AN INTIMATE CONVERSATION 6th Jul 2016. When we first wrote about the Art Apart Fair, it was held in a hotel. Come 11 July, the Art Apart Fair moves into the heart of Orchard Road, with its 8 th edition debuting at Isetan Wisma Atria. The Art Apart Fair first broke the notion of fine art and its white cube environment by holding the fair in a hotel—so why the shift? THE MULTIPLICITY OF TOTALITY IN 'NG ENG TENG: 1+1=1' An invitation into discovering the complexity that Ng’s works afford, Ng Eng Teng: 1+1=1 breathes new life into our previous conceptions of the artist’s works, complicating, tangling, and altogether unsteadying our fixed notions of the man himself—opening up to us a horizon of possibility. SOME DEATHS CAN’T BE BURIED The use of aesthetics in this sense ensures that works of art and their ceremonious activities buttress the superiority of the alchemical power of the Thai state. Sethaseree’s Some Deaths Can’t Be Buried explores an interrelation between these concepts of aesthetics and totalitarianism. HOMING IN: THE STUDIO BEHIND SHIBUI FURNITURE COLLECTIVE Kim works with wood that he sources himself, designing and making them into furniture that strives for an understated, quiet beauty. It is no wonder that Kim chose the term Shibui — “simple, subtle, and unobtrusive beauty” in Japanese—for his collective. But craft requires space, and this is FLOWERS FOR X: PATRICIA EUSTAQUIO AT YAVUZ GALLERY Flowers for X presents us with a slew of seemingly delicate and beautiful flowers, rendered in pale pink, grey, and black. They are printed on flowing silk, splayed across the white floor of the gallery, and painted on circular canvases that are hung up on walls.
