In the gallery world, an emerging artist is as much a “marketing” term as anything else. It is used to infuse a sense that this person is going to go places and you need to get in on the early pieces and lower prices. That is the larger use/abuse by galleries in HOW YOUR ART MAKES PEOPLE FEEL People don’t buy what you do or why you do it. They buy how it makes them feel. - Bernadette Jiwa When I heard Jiwa utter those words on a stage in Denver last year, I had an AHA! moment. I had previously been sucked in by Simon Sinek’s famous TED Talk, Start With Why. People don’t buy what you do, or how you do it. They buy why you do it. It’s a powerful message that is hard to THE SUCCESSFUL ARTIST'S GUIDE TO MAKING A LIVING AS AN ARTIST What I've shared here is a long list of considerations for making a living as an artist. If I had to boil it down, I'd encourage you to focus on 1 thing: Commitment. When the commitment is there, you can figure out the rest. When you're committed to your art and your goal, nothing will stand in your way. ART EXHIBITION CHECKLIST AND TIMELINE TO CUSTOMIZE The tasks on your checklist, and the deadlines you give them, will depend on the following: The type of exhibition (juried, self-curated, open studio) If the venue is in charge of sales and refreshments or if that’s up to you. With this in mind, you can HOW TO PROMOTE AN ART EXHIBITION ON YOUR WEBSITE How to Promote an Art Exhibition on Your Website. Solo exhibitions, as well as 2- or 3-person shows, deserve your full attention. If you have an important exhibition coming up, give it the (virtual) space it deserves. Create a page on your website for your show. You probably already have a page for all of your exhibitions, but I’m talking YOUR LIFE’S WORK: THE ARTIST'S RETROSPECTIVE Your Life’s Work: The Artist's Retrospective. A retrospective is an exhibition that shows off the entire oeuvre of an artist’s career. Typically arranged chronologically and later in an artist’s life, retrospectives treat art viewers to the progression of the work in a single space. I try to visit as many retrospectives as I can for WHAT ARTISTS ARE GETTING PAID FOR TEACHING In 2010-11, I asked Twitter and Facebook followers what they were earning for their workshops. Here are some barely-edited insights. I hope you'll leave a comment with any updates in the last decade. Nancy Bradford, Super Tuscan Sky. HANDWRITTEN THANK-YOU NOTES FOR ARTISTS Remember to gather brick-and-mortar addresses whenever you can. Keep your cards, pen, and stamps handy at all times and make a point to travel with them. Use short pockets of time to get those notes in the mail. Blow people away! Embrace the handwritten thank-you note. Ideas for what to say in your thank-you notes are in Action 11 of I'd Rather IS YOUR ARTIST STATEMENT WRITTEN IN FIRST OR THIRD PERSON And that’s when the information is on your website. It's perfectly okay to combine your statement with your bio on an About the Artist page and write everything in 3rd person.
