AND HERE WE ARE

My family and I are on a mission to taste and discover this beautiful world. As a family, we are California-born, but we have been expats for the last 10 years, having lived in Germany, England, and now Spain. We love to travel and to eat, and are always awaiting the next bite, the next adventure. 15 EDIBLE PLANTS TO FORAGE IN YOUR OWN BACK YARD Lesser Celandine. This plant is best eaten before it flowers, and should be cooked first because it contains protaonemonin, which is a toxic compound that is destroyed by heat. It was popular in the past for providing vitamin C to otherwise scurvy-prone people. Primrose. This plant wants to live! WHAT TO DO WITH SAGE (ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU HAVE TOO MUCH!) It turns out that sage is a fantastic herb to have too much of. It is one of the earliest known medicinal plants, and has so many uses. The name salvia which is derived from salvare, the latin word for healing is a great indicator of its history of medicinal use. QUICK & EASY PLUM WINE 5 lbs (2.25 kilos) of plums– I used little red wild plums, but any kind will work; 3 lbs (1.35 kilos) of sugar (I like to use raw sugar/ sucanat); 1 gallon of water; 1 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice; 1 packet cider yeast (ask at a local brew shop, or this one should work well); In terms of supplies, there are a few basic items you should have. You can often find these on craigslist, and HOW TO MAKE RHUBARB SODA (IT'S NATURALLY PROBIOTIC!) We enjoyed our Rhubarb Soda this weekend– it was nice and sunny, and we did a lot of work outside. It is rosy, tart and so refreshing– and not to mention the pleasures of drinking something pink.. Plus, there is something really exciting about making your own intense carbonation, naturally. HOW TO MAKE RHUBARB WINE 1.5 kg (3.5 lb) rhubarb; 1.3 kg (just under 3 lb) sugar– we like to use organic sugar or sucanat; 250 ml (8 oz) white grape juice concentrate; 1 sachet general purpose white wine yeast; 1 tsp yeast nutrient; In terms of supplies, there are a few basic items you should have. You can often find these on craigslist, and definitely at a brewing supply store, or you can order them on amazon (the HAZELNUT PIE CRUST (GRAIN-FREE!) Using a food processor or pastry cutter, cut butter into the flour mixture until the size of large crumbs. Add the egg and pulse just until a dough begins to form. Take the dough out and form it into a ball, then flatten into a disk. Cover with parchment paper or plastic wrap and refrigerate for 20 minutes or more. 10 TIPS FOR BETTER HOMEMADE CIDER A couple tips for maintaining aromas in your cider: 1) Ferment at a cool temperature. If you can keep your fermentation going at 55-65 F, it is more likely to ferment slowly and keep the aromas in tact. 2) Using a pectic enzyme helps the aromas to be released by the pulp and absorbed by the juice.
