Our History - American Royal. About / Our History. The American Royal began in October of 1899 as the National Hereford Show, the first nationwide show for the exposition and sale of purebred cattle. The show featured 541 registered Herefords, with 300 Herefords sold for an average price of $334. Estimated attendance was 55,000. COMPETITION INFORMATION Competition Information - American Royal. The American Royal World Series of Barbecue is the largest barbecue competition in the world, bringing teams together from across the United States and across the oceans, seas, and ponds to compete for the title of American Grand Champion . BBQ JUDGING OPPORTUNITIES Judges are selected on a first come – first serve basis. Judging is complimentary, but a small donation of $20 is appreciated and goes back to support the American Royal mission. Judges may not judge Open Sides and Kids Que due to timing. If a judge signs up for both, they will be placed at one of the events based on the American Royal’s BARBECUE HALL OF FAME Barbecue Royalty came out to celebrate in 2019! We were honored to have so many past inductees join us at the Black Apron Ceremony of 2019 Inductees, C.B. Judging is complimentary, but a small donation of $20 is appreciated and goes back to support the American Royal mission. Judges may not judge Open Sides and Kids Que due to timing. If a judge signs up for both, they will be placed at one of the events based on the American Royal’s CONTESTANT INFORMATION Stalls will be assigned and are required with each horse entry. No tie-outs are allowed. Please be advised this location has concrete floors. Outside shavings are NOT allowed. You may purchase shavings onsite they will be $9 a bag in the Feed Room.
