The microscopic examination also gives Marx another clue, a dent on the pylon bulkhead. The dent was the point of origin of all thefatigue cracks.

AMERICAN AIRLINES (DC-10) FLIGHT 191, 1979 CHICAGO O'HARE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT On May 25, 1979, a McDonnell-Douglas DC-10-10 aircraft was preparing to take of from the Chicago-O'Hare International Airport in Illinois. On that Friday before the Memorial Day weekend, the weather was clear with the temperature being 63"F' and a visibility of 15 miles (clearblue skies).
The
person above in this newspaper article is Captain Walter Lux, pilot offlight 191.
In command of Flight 191 was Capt. Walter Lux., an extremely experienced pilot with 22,000 hours behind the DC-10 nearly since its release date eight years ago (from that time period). Assisting him were First Officer James Dillard and flight engineer Alfred Udovich. Together his assistants had a total of 25,000 hours of flight experience between them. At 1450, Flight 191 was clear to taxi to runway 32R (right). The wind was blowing Northeast at 22 knots (unit of speed equal to nautical mile/1.151 mph). ------------------------- -------------------------THE TAKE OFF
American Airline was clear for taxi and at 1502 the Captain acknowledged, "American one ninety-one underway." On the cockpit, a live camera was recording the take off. This new feature allowed passengers to watch the take off from the cabin. The take off was normal until just at 1504 the plane was seconds away from taking off. The plane then had accelerated to V1 (speed in which you cannot abort the take off, you have to keep going). Next, the pilot reached rotate (this is when the pilot raises the nose to get off the ground). During the rotation, the No. 1 engine with its pylon separated from the aircraft, went over the top of the left wing, and crashed on therunway.
FLYING
Flight 191 continued to fly and reached an altitude of 300ft. above ground with its wings still level. The Captains instruments suddenly die due to the power he lost from the left engine (no engine). The pilot's best choice was to continue and keep going to a higher altitude. The DC-10 should have been able to climb with only two engines but suddenly the plane begins to rotate to the left sharply. Losing power from one engine shouldn't have caused the airplane to bank. During this time, passengers had a clear view of the plane's frightening side way turn and soon their fate. A trailer park just north of the airport was home to many and the plane was headed straight for it at the time.THE CRASH
Witnesses on the ground at that time could clearly see flight 191 flying on its side and jet fuel being ejected out of the plane. The DC-10 crashed into an open field near a trailer park about 4,600ft. northwest from of the departure end of runway 32K. The aircraft was demolished. Two hundred and seventy-one people died on board, two people were killed on the ground, and two other people on the ground sustained second and third degree burns. The aircraft crashed at about 1504 during daylight hours. -------------------------THE LEFT OVER
It was clear that there were no survivors after the ignition of the jet fuel. Less than a minute form the take off, there was almost nothing left from flight one ninety-one. There were many recognizable pieces of the aircraft on the scene such as the landing gear and wings but sadly there were no survivors. Rescuers found many horrifying scenes such as torsos and body parts. This was truly the worst aviation disaster in US history. Powered by Create your own unique website with customizable templates.
