Care for Life Grant. This program is funded through the efforts of other patients their family and friends who volunteer with ALS Ride For Life. It is designed to help fellow PALS in need of care-giving assistance. Only individuals with a confirmed medical diagnosis of ALS and who do not have healthcare coverage for respite care are eligible

MEETING THE CHALLENGES OF LIFE – COVID 19 A message from Christopher Pendergast, ALS patient and Ride For Life founder I have spoken to over fifty – thousand students in the last decade and a half sharing my challenging battle with ALS, the power of hope linked with determination and faith. I always conclude each presentation by stating four guides I created for successful coping. The four principles have aided me in dealing and persevering through a rare twenty –seven year battle with ALS. I believe they are helpful for dealing with overwhelming challenges. It very much applies to the challenge our nation (and world) currently face. In these chaotic times, it is easy to become anxious, overwhelmed and ultimately,

hopeless.

The four cardinal points to focus on:

Never Give Up

Never Lose Hope

Always Remain Optimistic Be Willing To Defy the Odds It is grinding, unimaginable pressure that turns a lump of carbonized coal into a diamond. Blast furnace heat makes the strongest steel. Hard times produce the best. Times of tremendous crisis are also times of limitless opportunities to rise up and meet the challenge. Our country’s finest leaders emerged from challenge and chaos to rally

our nation.

Eighty years ago, ‘The Greatest Generation’ rose to lift our people out of the Depression. Soon after, they shed their blood by the hundreds of thousands to defend the country against an enemy threatening to destroy it. “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at

change”

I can’t minimize the people who will endure the loss of a loved one or lose jobs and suffer economically. Entire industries will be turned upside down, maybe permanently altered changed like the whalers or the wagon builders. I realize the workers now are paying a heavy price in this unprecedented crisis. My heart aches for them. Taking a universal perspective, we must not allow those sacrifices to be forgotten. Let us not simply wait out the virus. Let us not win by simple attrition, allowing it to run its course. I call on fellow Americans to turn this tragedy into good outcomes. Seize the chance to turn this challenge into an opportunity. • bring families back together as they have not been in a generation • re-introduce dialogue and intimacy to the social setting • adjust to a restructured work place • rekindle the importance of community and interdependence • renew the American frontier spirit of helping one another • revive the importance of self-sacrifice Don’t panic. Resist hopelessness. Try to remember my four Guidelines: never give up, never lose hope, always remain Optimistic and be willing to defy the odds! Use them as weapons to fight back and overcome this new challenge. Two giants among the pantheon of world leaders have fitting quotes to conclude my thoughts on the COVID 19 pandemic. Franklin Roosevelt remind us, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” Winston Churchill said, “Never have so many owed so

much to so few.”

God bless our health care workers, first responders and ALL those fighting to end this scourge.
