A BRIEF HISTORY OF AI A Brief History of AI Introduction. The intellectual roots of AI, and the concept of intelligent machines, may be found in Greek mythology. Intelligent artifacts appear in literature since then, with real (and fraudulent) mechanical devices actually demonstrated to behave with some degree of intelligence. QUESTIONNAIRE & OPINION SURVEY The most striking result is the sheer number of respondents. In our 2020 survey, which reached the same audience, we had 1,239 responses. This year, we had a total of 5,154. After eliminating 1,580 respondents who didn't complete the survey, we're left with 3,574 responses--almost three times as many as last year.* TO NOW | AITOPICS
1 day ago · Information about AI from the News, Publications, and ConferencesAutomatic Classification – Tagging and Summarization – Customizable Filtering and AnalysisIf you are looking for an answer to the question What is Artificial Intelligence? and you only have a minute, then here's the definition the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence offers on its home page: "theNATURAL LANGUAGE
1 day ago · One goal of AI work in natural language is to enable communication between people and computers without resorting to memorization of complex commands and procedures. Automatic translation – enabling scientists, business people and just plain folks to interact easily with people around the world – is another goal. Both are just part of the broad field of AI and natural language, CASE-BASED REASONING "At the highest level of generality, a general CBR cycle may be described by the following four processes:RETRIEVE the most similar case or casesREUSE the information and knowledge in that case to solve the problemREVISE the proposed solutionRETAIN the parts of this experience likely to be useful for future problem solving " – Case-Based Reasoning: Foundational Issues, Methodological RULE-BASED REASONING A rule-based system may be viewed as consisting of three basic components: a set of rules , a data base , and an interpreter for the rules. In the simplest design, a rule can be viewed as a simple conditional statement, and the invocation of rules as a sequence of actions chained by modus ponens.– from The Origin of Rule-Based Systems in AI.MACHINE LEARNING
1 day ago · "The field of Machine Learning seeks to answer these questions: How can we build computer systems that automatically improve with experience, and what are the fundamental laws that govern all learning processes?"– from The Discipline of Machine Learning by Tom Mitchell. CMU-ML-06-108, 2006. SHOGI: A MEASURE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE Though last Sunday's Tokyo assembly elections garnered the most media attention, another contest came in a close second, even if only two people were involved. Fourteen-year-old Sota Fujii's record-setting winning streak of 29 games of shogi was finally broken on July 2 when he lost a match to 22-year-old Yuki Sasaki. Fujii has turned into a media superstar in the past year because of his PANDEMONIUM: A PARADIGM FOR LEARNING A significant prcursor to the Blackboard Model of problem solving. In D. V. Blake and A. This can lead to sub-optimal results. Today we're going to learn how to quickly and efficiently narrow down the space of available models to find those that are most likely to perform best on your problem type. We'll also see how we can keep track of our models' performances using Weights and Biases and compare them. ------------------------- HOW CAN ENERGY & UTILITIES TAP THEIR FULL POTENTIAL? #artificialintelligence40 minutes ago But as these organizations grapple with growing demand, erratic temperatures, aging infrastructure, and the threat of cyberattacks, many struggle to maintain a high level of service in an uncertain and unpredictable landscape. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), as powered by big data, have the potential to modernize energy and utilities organizations by identifying ways to reduce waste and redundancy, protect and manage assets, and detect performance anomalies – all while realizing valuable cost savings, both for the organization and the customer. In this blog, we explore the three main areas where AI is making a mark on the energy and utilities sector today and how such investments may impact the future. Each year in the U.S. alone, trillions of gallons of water are lost due to aging pipes, broken water mains, and faulty meters. Replacing the entire system would be massively expensive, time-consuming, and impractical, which means that utility companies must take a localized approach torepairs.

------------------------- BIG DATA, ML AND APIS: MARKETERS THE DIGITAL JARGON THEY DON'TUNDERSTAND
#artificialintelligence40 minutes ago Despite 60% of marketers wanting to'own' the digital experience, many admit that they don't fully understand digital terminology such as API, big data and machine learning. The research, which surveyed over 200 IT professionals and 200 marketers, explores the growing disconnect between each group as they struggle to decide who should'own' the emerging digital experience sector. Magnolia found that 24% of marketers don't understand what'machine learning' is, and 23% say they don't know what the term'big data' means. A third of marketers also confess to not know what API stands for. IT teams are also suffering from a similar disconnect, with 77% saying they don't understand the buzzwords marketers use. artificial intelligence , big data , marketer , (9Â more...) #artificialintelligenceTechnology:

------------------------- WHAT CAN MACHINE LEARNING TELL US ABOUT AMERICA'S GUN LAWS? #artificialintelligence40 minutes ago In the United States, it seems we never have to go more than a few weeks without hearing about another mass shooting. With each new incident comes renewed calls to strengthen gun control laws, expand federal background checks, and get rid of assault rifles. Though the opposing faction promptly dismisses each appeal by citing 2nd Amendment rights, other discussions of practicality often emerge. Specifically, the efficacy of such laws is often called into question. How do we know which laws work and which ones don't? artificial intelligence , criminal law , homicide rate ,(12Â more...)

------------------------- RE/INSURANCE OPPORTUNITY AS MASS TORT LITIGATIONS ESCALATE: PRAEDICAT CEO - REINSURANCE NEWS #artificialintelligence40 minutes ago With mass tort style litigations reaching new highs in 2019, insurance and reinsurance companies should increasingly be thinking about how to capitalise on this emerging opportunity, according to Robert Reville, CEO of insurtech risk modelling and analytics firm Praedicat. Speaking at the Reinsurance Rendezvous event in Monte Carlo, Reville explained that a number of factors had come together to drive the increase in mass litigation activity this year. For example, hedge funds and other sources of capital are now helping to finance litigation in the US, making it possible for the plaintiff's to continue to drive very expensive forms of litigation. What's more, Praedicat believes there is a sense that the jury pool in the US is increasingly suspicious of corporations, and are more willing to accept that they could have been involved in nefarious actions. Finally – and of most relevance to the re/insurance industry – is the decades of accumulated science that is being brought to bear to describe what corporations are selling and doing that could potentially cause bodily or property damage, or environmental damage. artificial intelligence , banking & finance , litigation ,(8 more...)

------------------------- HOW IS MACHINE LEARNING USED IN MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS #artificialintelligence41 minutes ago Machine Learning in the medical field will improve a patient's health with minimum costs. Use cases of ML are making a near-perfect diagnosis, recommend best medicines, predict readmissions and identify high-risk patients. These predictions are based on the dataset of anonymized patient records and symptoms exhibited by a patient. Adoption of ML is happening at a rapid pace despite many hurdles, which can be overcome by practitioners and consultants who know the legal, technical, and medical obstacles. Diagnostic errors account for about 10% of yearly patient deaths, mostly due to issues like poor tracking, misinformation, and miscommunication. epilepsy , health & medicine , oncology , (12 more...) #artificialintelligence Country: Europe  > United Kingdom(0.49)

------------------------- ROBUSTNESS BEYOND SECURITY: COMPUTER VISION APPLICATIONS #artificialintelligence41 minutes ago We discuss our latest paper on computer vision applications of robust classifiers. We are able to leverage the features learned by a single classifier to develop a rich toolkit for diverse computer vision applications. Our results suggest the robust classification framework as a viable alternative to more complex or task-specific approaches. In our previous post, we saw how robust models capture high-level, human-aligned features that can be directly manipulated through gradient descent. In this post, we demonstrate how to leverage these robust models to perform a wide range of computer vision tasks. artificial intelligence , class maximization , maximization, (15Â more...)
