Crop Physiology. The ADAS crop physiology team focus on improving performance and reducing pollution of cropping systems for food, feed and biofuel production through an understanding of crop physiology, plant genetics and crop management. We have the largest group of crop physiologists in the UK. The core elements of the group’s expertise HERBICIDE RESISTANCE TESTING In the UK there are four main grass weeds and three broad-leaved weeds affected by herbicide resistance to a range of different modes of action. ADAS offers herbicide resistance testing for all of the following grass and broad-leaved weed species. Just over a year ago, the government introduced new Farming Rules for Water, which aim to get “full value from fertilisers and soil”.. The new rules focus on the storage and application of manure and artificial fertiliser, and keeping livestock away from water courses to prevent soil erosion and diffuse pollution. As concerns around climate change, food security and environmental degradation mount, the concept of ‘soil health’ is increasingly in the public domain. 2015 saw the UN’s international year of soils and over the last few years several major global food and drink companies have made commitments to safeguarding soil health in their sustainability plans. ADAS IS PART OF NEW INITIATIVE TO EXPLORE THE CONTROL OF The two-year initiative will be led by the Moredun Research Institute and is funded by Defra and the EU via the Rural Development Programme for England.
