CRETE BEYOND BEACHES The monastery played a crucial role during the Revolution against the Turkish (Ottoman) domination in 1866. A revolution that changed the course of the island of Crete. Not knowing that the monastery is actually a symbol of self-sacrifice, freedom and heroism, we entered the gate. During the 1866 besiege of the central Rethymnon districtaround
MUST-VISIT IN INDIA: KAMASUTRA TEMPLES IN KHAJURAHO Khajuraho, undiscovered territory in the heart of India, 600 kilometers southeast of New Delhi. Many hours by car from Agra (Taj Mahal) and Varanasi (Ganges). Where summer temperatures can reach unbearable heights of 50 ° C or 122°F. Where grasshoppers take over the town after sunset (really, they jump on you while eating in arestaurant!).
THE REMARKABLE SS ROTTERDAM HOTEL The ss Rotterdam is the largest passenger ship ever built in the Netherlands: 228 meters long, 28 meters wide and 61 meters in height. It was inaugurated by Dutch Queen Juliana in 1958. Until 1971 it ran scheduled services to New York City, but turned more towards cruiseswhen air
VISITING TERSCHELLING IN WINTER: WHY WOULD YOU? Terschelling is one of the 5 inhabited Dutch Wadden islands. 80 percent of Terschelling is nature, with some areas that are prohibited for visitors during breeding season. The island features over 70km of biking path, there is a lot to discover. Tourism is the main source of income for Terschelling. VISIT THE NETHERLANDS: OPEN AIR MUSEUM IN ARNHEM Netherlands Open Air Museum. As the museum very well describes, it’s a journey through the last two hundred years of our small country. The great thing: it’s a combination of buildings and objects from different parts of the country, both city and rural areas. 10 MAGICAL FOREST MOMENTS (CAPTURED IN A PHOTOGRAPH) 10 magical forest moments (captured in a photograph) A forest is magic. At least to me. The smell, the sounds (or sometimes just the pure silence) and the colors. That magic is enhanced by the (quarterly) change of color, fog, and sometimes a wild animal. For people following me on Instagram, my change of perspective has beenevident: from
WHY PETRA IS ONE OF THE SEVEN NEW WONDERS OF THE WORLD The ancient city of Petra became one of the 7 New Wonders of the World in 2007 when it was chosen in a global poll. This campaign was launched in 1999 by Swiss adventurer Bernard Weber. Almost 200 nominations were entered into competition, and the list was narrowed down to the 21 most-voted by early 2006. Now, Jordan’s Petra joinsthe list
BAMBOO TRAIN IN BATTAMBANG, CAMBODIA: IT'S A CLASSIC This train (although it is nothing more than a bamboo platform on two steel axles with wheels) is a surviving part of the former Cambodian railway network. No trains are running in Cambodia anymore and most tracks are left to be overgrown with weeds. In the rural city of Battambang (which is actually the 2nd city of Cambodia) they are stillACT OF TRAVELING

Photography. This part of my blog is all about photography. Every trip I take hundreds of pictures, far more than I can upload in my regular blog posts. That’s why I have started sharing additional travel photography on these pages. These are examples of various photographystyles.
TRAVEL INSPIRATION ARCHIVES Travel inspiration. These stories are not about a particular destination. This is my (sometimes philosophical) view on traveling and how to create a better travel experience. On top of that there are posts to inspire your own travel photography! Travel inspiration. DUTCH PEOPLE LIVE BELOW SEA LEVEL. THE ICONIC AFSLUITDIJK Dutch people live below sea level. The iconic Afsluitdijk made that possible. The Afsluitdijk is the longest dike in the Netherlands, protecting our country from the sea for more than 80 years already! 32 Kilometers long, the Afsluitdijk is more than ‘just a dike’. It has become an icon of water engineering with high cultural andhistorical

ADDO ELEPHANT PARK IN SOUTH AFRICA: GREAT FOR SELF-DRIVE Addo Elephant Park (another beautiful South African National Park) is very suitable for a self-drive and easy to navigate. It took a while before we spotted some of the (larger) animals, but we didn’t complain because our first encounter actually was a large herd ofelephants!
10 PICTURES THAT MAKE YOU WANT TO VISIT 10 Pictures that make you want to visit Marrakech Medina. A picture is worth a thousand words. I was a bit overwhelmed by the Marrakech medina: the narrow alleys where pedestrians are being “harassed” by motorbikes, pushy salesmen, and a continuous flow of people wantingto
TRAFFIC IN INDIA: TERRIBLE OR TERRIFIC? Traffic in India: Tuk-Tuks. Transportation in India is impressive. Agreed, pollution can be terrible and riding a Tuk-Tuk while behind a bus spewing out exhaust gases is not a real pleasure. But it is great to experience! There is never a dull moment as Tuk-Tuks, motorbikes and rickshaws always find a way to maneuver through the total chaosand
WHY YOU SHOULD COMBINE THE GARDEN ROUTE AND ROUTE 62 Route 62 crosses the Klein Karoo area, a place that many visitors to South Africa tend to overlook. It’s the famous Garden Route and the coastal area towards Cape Town that draws the attention. But inland, north of the Langeberg mountain range, stunning semi-desert landscapes and small rural towns are waiting for you. STREET ART IN FLORENCE: LOOK AT THE TRAFFIC SIGNS! One of Clet’s bumper stickers. “This is the best game ever Dad!” Clet has started to move around Europe with his street sign art, but all the pictures we took are from Florence.. and you are very lucky because I have added lots of them to this post! THINGS TO SEE IN COPENHAGEN: YELLOW HOUSES OF NYBODER Yellow houses of Nyboder. The area is called Nyboder. And yes, the yellow color combined with the infinite repetition is enchanting. The houses are old though, built in 1631(!).__
