Through the Illinois State Physical Activity and Nutrition Program and funding from the ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION ALLIANCE After many months of effort from advocates and legislators, the Illinois House and Senate passed a bill mandating that the state cover 100 percent of the cost of walking and biking infrastructure on state roads, just like they do for cars and trucks. Active Trans championed the legislation along with Ride Illinois and the Metropolitan Planning Council. The bill is now being sent to Governor ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION ALLIANCE As an organization advocating for walking, biking, and transit, we must be able to articulate our positions on intersecting issues, such as housing, employment, and policing. These Transportation Issue Briefs were developed for this purpose. ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION ALLIANCE The COVID-19 pandemic has changed a lot of what we perceive and know about mobility and transportation. In recent months, Active Trans met with more than 100 stakeholders who are invested in our work. We spoke with community partners, elected officials, department of transportation and transit agency officials, and residents across thecity and suburbs.
ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION ALLIANCE The wait is over. After several years of delays and a lengthy construction process, the Navy Pier Flyover is finally complete. The long-awaited bridge for people walking and biking will help ease traffic congestion and improve safety along the Chicago Lakefront Trail and near Navy Pier while enriching the city’s skyline with an iconic, one-of-a-kind architectural wonder. Last month, Mayor ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION ALLIANCE ABOUT THE BLT The Boulevard Lakefront Tour (BLT) began in 1989, four years after Active Transportation Alliance was founded, and was the organization’s first fundraiser. But, it was more than that. The ride occupies a special place in the history of Chicagoland bicycling because it proved to elected officials that thousands of people wanted to ride and improve conditions for bicycling. ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION ALLIANCE No matter if you’re a parent with young children or someone who hasn’t ridden a bike in decades, cycling is a great way to get around. Regardless of whether you’re biking for pleasure or you’re using a bike because it makes the most economic sense, you’ll find loads of high-quality bike routes across Chicago and in many suburbs. If you’re new to biking or someone who hasn’t been ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION ALLIANCE Last summer, Chicago’s shared streets program provided opportunities for residents to safely spend time outside during the peak of the pandemic. While people appreciated the extra space for recreation and safely being outdoors, the program did little to address connectivity issues with the city’s walking and biking networks, according to feedback from Active Trans members and supporters. ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION ALLIANCE After passing in the Illinois House of Representatives last month, our bill — HB 270 — to eliminate the local cost share for walking and biking infrastructure on state roads has now passed out of committee in the Illinois Senate. But there’s only two weeks left in the legislative session and we need to make sure it’s called to thefloor for a vote.
