Australian International Food Security Centre is part of the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research. The Prime Minister established the AIFSC to strengthen the Australian Government’s contribution to global food security. GENETICALLY SUPERIOR WHITEWOOD A USEFUL TREE FOR VANUATU Key points Vanuatu is a net importer of timber, but whitewood has the potential to be grown more widely for local use and to be exported. Genetic improvement of whitewood that makes it easier to grow and manage will reduce production costs. Cheaper production costs, combined with knowledge sharing to show growers how to manage whitewood, is making the tree a more attractive option. AUSTRALIAN INTERNATIONAL FOOD SECURITY CENTRE The Australian International Food Security Research Centre ( AIFSRC) is accelerating the delivery and adoption of agricultural innovations for food security. We are doing this by bridging the gap between the development and adoption of research outcomes. These innovations include technologies, enabling policies and improved farmingpractices.

Ray Collins, Benjamin Dent and Lawrence Bonney. 2016 AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION APPROACHES This project surveyed approaches to agricultural extension ('practice change') and new ideas about improved ways forward. It reviewed recent evolutions in agricultural extension around the world, with a focus on ACIAR's priority regions. Farm households and rural communities face more and bigger challenges because of climate change. TOWARDS MORE PROFITABLE AND SUSTAINABLE VEGETABLE This project aimed to enhance the profitability and sustainability of smallholder vegetable farmers in north-western Vietnam, through improved market engagement (domestic and export) and integrated resource and disease-management practices. The project particularly focused on women and ethnic minorities engaged in horticultural value chains in Sa Pa and Bac Ha districts in Lao Cai Province. 5. COVID-19 AND FOOD SYSTEMS IN PACIFIC ISLAND COUNTRIES Based on a 5% contraction scenario, poverty would increase by 27% in Solomon Islands and 15% in Vanuatu (Hoy 2020). Under a 20% contraction scenario, 1.2 million people in the region would be pushed into extreme poverty. This is an increase of more than 40% on pre-COVID-19levels (Hoy 2020).
TESTING AND REFINING THE COMPREHENSIVE FRAMEWORK OF This project aims to refine a standardised methodology for response assessment for the sustainable management of land, water, and soils in the Philippines.
