What does it mean to be a "trauma-Informed community"? It's a question we at Peace4Tarpon ask ourselves frequently - and the answer evolves as we discover through this journey who we are and how we are. I am still processing the story I am about to share with you. It's not the feel-good type with a tidy ending but more like a series of snapshots cut into puzzle pieces that don't quite mesh. TRAUMA INFORMED EDUCATORS NETWORK PODCAST There are now 10 episodes on the Trauma Informed Educators Network Podcast. The most recent was with Kat Stern in the UK who is currently working on developing and researching a trauma-informed method being used with incarcerated youth in the UK. Her knowledge is equally as captivating as per passion. Previous episodes included interviews with Dr. Bruce Perry, Ingrid Cochren, and Dr. Lori CATCHING UP WITH KELSEY FROM 'PAPER TIGERS' (PIVOT) 2.02 Nor can one simply deduce a one-size-fits-all solution to a trauma-informed education. But there is no denying something both subtle and powerful at work between teacher and student alike: the quiet persistence of love. DOCUMENTARY BROKEN PLACES USES ARCHIVAL FOOTAGE TO TELL Why do children exposed to the same level of adversity in childhood have different outcomes? Why do some thrive and others become completely damaged? These were the kinds of burning questions that prompted filmmaker Roger Weisberg to produce the documentary Broken Places , which was shown in a private screening at the 2018 National ACEs Conference in San Francisco. WHY LOVING WHAT YOU HAVE CAN FEEL SCARY FOR THOSE WHO’VE HAD ADVERSE CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCESTian Dayton · 2
hours ago
To ring in the New Year, I could quote statistics of how certain feelings benefit your cholesterol levels and pump up your immune system and extend your life by 2.3 years. We could discuss that science has proven that appreciation begets happiness and happiness is healthy. But you’ve already heard all that. So on the everyday shortcut wisdom front, what I really have found of value, if you want to have a life worth extending, is to love what you have, to appreciate the life you are living...Read Story

By Dan Levin, The New York Times, December 28, 2019 Every month, Lila Edwards wakes up early for a two-hour road trip with a group of girls that ends with them walking single file through a metal detector. Inside an empty classroom, Lila eagerly and anxiously awaits Inmate 01740964. When the inmate, a woman serving a 40-year sentence for murder, walked in during a recent visit, Lila collapsed into her arms and didn’t let go for more than a minute. These monthly visits at aminimum security...

OPIOID DEATHS REISE WHEN AUTO PLANTS CLOSE, STUDY SHOWS Rafael Maravilla (ACEs Connection Staff)23 hours ago
By Niraj Chokshi, The New York Times, December 30, 2019 The last two decades have brought both a sharp decline in automaking jobs in the United States and the rise of a deadly epidemic of opioid abuse. According to a new study, the two trends may well be related. The study, published Monday in JAMA Internal Medicine, found that opioid deaths were about 85 percent higher among people of prime working age in counties where such factories remained open. The finding underscores the role that...Read Story

THE WINNER ADVANTAGE: BENEFITS OF SELF- AWARENESSJewrine Brown ·
1 day ago
If we search the content of our hearts, we can locate several areas that can benefit from a dose of humility, which increases understanding of the necessity of gratitude. To consciously achieve success, it will require sacrificing your ego, pride, and sense of entitlement without relinquishing self-dignity. On the journey, individuals often encounter setbacks from poor decision-making skills, which alter their lifestyles, sense of security, and even general well-being. If you fall into this...Read Story

STUDY OPPORTUNITY: THE EFFECTS OF REMEMBERED EXPERIENCES ON ADULTATTACHMENT STYLES
Nicole FitzGerald
__ 2 days ago
__0 likes · 28 views Literature suggests that specific parenting styles and practices of mother/father figures influence adulthood attachment behaviors. However, these experiences are reliant on the adult child’s perception of reality at that time. Furthermore, the literature overlooks causation of attachment; that is, experiences during one’s life can alter secure attachments in childhood to insecure attachments in adulthood. With these driving dimensions, the purpose of this study is to garner a clearer...Read More...__Posted 2 days ago

STATES THAT REIMBURSE MEDICAID PROVIDERS FOR ACES SCREENING - HELPLaura Shamblin

__3 likes · 50 views I have an Oklahoma State Senator willing to propose a bill to allow our state medicaid to reimburse providers to screen for ACEs. Currently the federal match is only $2.77 and ours is not even activated to be used. You may want to check your state. To reimburse more the state legislature would need to set aside money for it like I know CA did. I could use any information either about the specific bill in CA that did it - I'm having trouble finding the language used- or any other state that...Read More... __Updated 12 hours ago __Last Reply By Raymond LambertFirst Unread Post

INTEGRATING TIC INTO HEALTH CARE SYSTEMSRobin Matthies

__0 likes · 46 views Hi everyone, I'm wondering if anyone could point me toward some evidence-based (or promising practices) TIC efforts happening in health care systems. I know there are some things happening across the country but am not sure how much evidence-base there is around things being integrated into health care. More specifically, I'm looking how a state agency might partner with a health care system collaboratively to ensure that clinicians are incorporating TIC and have an understanding of how...Read More... __Updated 12/31/19__12:06 PM __Last Reply By Robert OlcottFirst Unread Post

PETS AS RESILIENCY FACTORS?Barbara Beaupre

__2 likes · 55 views I am new to the ACEs community; a person with particular lived experience with mental health diagnosis, but surprisingly few physical health issues (so far) given my high score. I was very much attached to our pets growing up, and I’m wondering if there has been any research done into whether a close connection with pets increases resilience. Does anyone have any information regarding this possibility? Thank youRead More... __Updated 12/29/19__1:45 PM __Last Reply By Robert OlcottFirst Unread Post

__7 likes · 245 views Here is a post I sent out a few days ago. The responses have been very encouraging but they have all come from women. I'm not being sexist here; I just want a good cross section of ACEs survivors. Yes, it's a long shot but long shots have had a way of coming true in my life. So here it is: Having only this year read about the ACEs Study, I am new to this website. Originally, I came here to find personal stories, similar to mine, to see how others with seven ACEs have fared in life. Now I am...Read More... __Updated 12/21/19__1:42 PM __Last Reply By Robert OlcottFirst Unread Post
