As for your question about whether the painted line on QED is necessary when right beside the MUP, I believe the answer is yes–the speed limit on the path is 20kph and the range of speed between walkers, and cyclists in a hurry who may not be obeying the limit can be huge. It is good to be (still) living, in a time when transportation is finally focusing on people who walk, people who cycle, and not just people who drive. Yet to come, of course, is any concern for the people living and working adjacent to roads, but that too will come. Someday soon, I hope. BUILDING LEBETTER FLATS, PART 4, DISTILLERY & THE ISLES That the general public’s view of the current LeBreton build out is less than unenthusiastic is beyond dispute. What is unsetting is how uninformed those views are since they are the too often the product of drive-by planning. As shown in Part 1 of Building LeBetter Flats, actually walking the site, even with landscaping only partially done, yields a much better experience. NO NEW BRIDGES TIL WE USE THE OLD ONES FIRST March 27, 2019March 26, 2019Westsideaction
Are existing Ottawa River bridges really at capacity? We traditionally measure capacity in vehicles carried, and by this measure some bridges are very busy. But if we measure capacity by people carried, the story changes. Typically, in North America, bridges … Continue reading No new bridges til we use the old ones firstConfederation Line

At last week’s transit committee meeting I gather the City announced it will continue to run buses through the downtown on Albert and Slater for three weeks after the LRT opens. URBAN DESIGN (XV) LOCAL PROMOTIONS March 16, 2019March 14, 2019Westsideaction

URBAN DESIGN (XIV) BENCHES, CAFES IN FINE MIXED USE AREAS March 15, 2019March 12, 2019Westsideaction
European cities have livlier street life than we do. Much of this is due to deliberate design choices, like limiting car traffic. And providing benches: Our new Official Plan is to make Ottawa attractive for those new age employers and … Continue reading Urban Design (xiv) Benches, cafes in fine mixed use areasdowntown ,

URBAN DETAIL (XIII) URBAN WAYFINDING, SIGNAGE March 14, 2019March 12, 2019Westsideaction

URBAN DESIGN (XII) CONTAINER HOTEL March 13, 2019March 12, 2019Westsideaction

URBAN DETAIL (XI) WOODEN BRIDGES March 12, 2019March 11, 2019Westsideaction
The Netherlands, and Europe generally, has a reputation amongst North American progressives as transit, train, and walkable-city nirvana. The reality is quite different. URBAN DETAIL (IX) MORE ON BIKE PARKING ISSUES March 8, 2019March 7, 2019Westsideaction
Right now Ottawa seems happy with bicycles parked on sidewalks. Even many downtown office buildings surround themselves with on-sidewalk bike parking (eg Jean Edwards buildings) while some others make room for bikes indoors (Constitution Square, Flaherty building). URBAN DETAIL (VIII) BIKES IN THE OLD TOWN CORE March 7, 2019March 7, 2019Westsideaction
There are gazillions of bikes in European town centres (not so much in the car centric suburbs). Reducing clutter via bike parking becomes an important tool in keeping old town centres passable.
