WHAT IS PRAYER IN BUDDHISM? The first part of the prayer is prostration. We prostrate to the Buddhas as a sign of respect to everything they represent: compassion, love, and wisdom. Prostration, where we place the highest part of our body – the head – on the ground, also helps us to BUDDHIST ANALYSIS: CAUSES, CONDITIONS AND RESULTS Then we have what’s called here the material cause (nyer-len-gyi rgyu), which I translate as the obtainer cause, and the simultaneously acting condition (lhan-cig byed-pa’i rkyen). So what are these? The main Buddhist practice is to transform our minds through eliminating our destructive side and enhancing our positive emotions. Although prayer and ritual can’t accomplish this alone, they can aid our meditation and study, adding structure to our Dharma activities. A balance of intellectual, emotional and devotional elements makes our Buddhist practice holistic and complete. DR. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A BUDDHIST Throughout the day, we try to remain mindful of how we’re acting, speaking, thinking and feeling. We especially try to notice if disturbing emotions like anger, greed, jealousy, arrogance and so on try to creep in. We take note when we’re acting selfishly or insensitively, or with self-pity and prejudice. On a subtler level, weaim to
HOW TO MEDITATE
Meditation on the Breath. The first meditation that most people start with is to simply sit quietly and focus on the breath. This is very helpful for calming down when we’re stressed. Breathe normally through the nose – not too fast, not too slow, not too deeply, not too shallow. Focus on the breath in one of two places – going in andout
WHAT IS MIND?
What Is Mind? The mind is the individual, subjective experiencing of “something” that is always changing, moment to moment. The concept of “ mind ” is elusive, and different languages conceptualize it differently. The Buddhist term for mind in Sanskrit is chitta, and has a wide range of meaning. It includes sense perception, verbal and THE TEN PERFECTIONS IN THERAVADA, MAHAYANA AND BON The ten far-reaching attitudes (pha-rol-tu phyin-pa, Skt. paramita, Pali: parami; perfections) are found in the Theravada, Mahayana, and Bon traditions.Literally, they are states of mind that bring bodhisattvas to the far shore – namely, to enlightenment. Refuge in Buddhism is about changing our state of mind. This means deepening our understanding of what gives life purpose, and what will bring us happiness now and in the future. In short, Buddhist refuge protects us from suffering. Buddhists generally use the phrase “ go for refuge ” or “ take refuge ” because refuge is an activeprocess.
RECITATION OF MANTRAS Use that verbal energy of the mind to say a mantra. But on a deeper level, as I've said, the mantra is a shaping of the breath; and by shaping the breath with the sound of the mantra, it shapes the subtle energies. And so there’s something called vajra recitation, in which one combines the breath with the sound of OM AH HUM. THE SEVEN-LIMB PRAYER The Seven-Limb Prayer. I take safe direction, till my purified state, from the Buddhas, the Dharma, and the Highest Assembly. ADVICE CONCERNING NGONDRO PRELIMINARY PRACTICES The Tibetan word ngondro (sngon-’gro) is usually translated as “preliminary practices,” but Tsenzhab Serkong Rinpoche, one of my main teachers, always emphasized that that’s not really the flavor of the word.Although literally it means “to go before,” so something that goes before something and leads to what comes next, the primary connotation of it is “preparation.” THE NAZI CONNECTION WITH SHAMBHALA AND TIBET The Nazi Expedition to TibetArrow downArrow up.
