The countdown is on! There are exactly 8 more weeks until Christmas, final exams have started, and the weather is beginning to finally change to something a little more accommodating (slowly but surely). Tensions are high but we have a full proof way of being able to relax each and every evening to at least get you through this coming week. With over thirty under 18’s gigs at your fingertips and literally some of Australia’s and the world’s most talented lining up to play for you, there is no excuse but to get amongst it. Throughout the project, we’ve tried to highlight the different ways in which Jazz can open up musical horizons and this week is no exception. For the purists out there you’ve got the likes of James Muller, Susan Gai Dowling, Venue 505’s iconic Jazz Jam, and Steve Barry just to name a few. For those looking for something a little different there’s Miriam Lieberman (who’s launching a new album), the Alturas, Blue Wednesday, the Alister Spence Trio Sonic Mayhem Orchesta and Tangalo mixing together a world of music from Latin to Orchestral, Folk to World and more with the traditions of Jazz. Oh and one other thing…there are ten gems in our list that are 100%FREE entry!
To get you even more excited you can listen back to this week’s ep of Take One where you’ll here these artists and more heading to a venue near you! All events listed do require the presence of an adult 18 years orover.
* This blog will now migrate to the Take One Radio show website continuing on with great interviews, reviews, gig guides, podcasts and more! 24.10.16 Foundry 616 James Muller David Theak organ Transplant–

INDUSTRY FEATURE – CHELSEA DEELEY (MUSIC FEEDS + EASTSIDE RADIO +AMRAP)
October 11, 2016

There’s always two sides to every story and from focusing on the creative side of the music industry we move into the business end. At 23 Chelsea Deeley has been a Music Director, run a major campaign raising over $10,000 for Eastside Radio, and interviewed the likes of Jack Garratt , but it was a hard slog getting there. From finishing degrees and spending months struggling to find the right job, volunteering, and working the 9-5 grind helping first time Mum’s find the perfect pram for their nearest and dearest to pay the rent, things finally started to fall into place early this year. Her experience across so many different parts of the Aussie Music scene has been able to give her a unique perspective on what’s going on. She still works like a dog, reviewing and interviewing for Music Feeds, helping artist find their audience with Amrap (Australian Music Radio Airplay Project) and presenting at Eastside Radio. The Learn it Live project caught up with Deeley to talk about her work and learn about the do’s and don’ts of making it in the industry, for both artists and business mindsalike!
NAME: Chelsea DeeleyAGE: 23
JOB: Amrap CD Mailout Coordinator , Freelance Journalist at MusicFeeds Australia
,
Artist Liaison Def Wolf Studios , Radio Presenter and Producer at Eastside Radio.
WHERE DID YOUR PASSION FOR MUSIC COME FROM? My mum used to play Motown, Soul, Ska, 2 Tone, Reggae, Punk, Rock and Pop around the house growing up. But when my dad got me into Nirvana I think that was the end of my indifference to music. My grandparents on both sides also love Elvis , and I still carry that love for the King withme.
After all of that, it was more so about self-discovery and finding this powerful, and probably slightly weird, emotional connection with music that I can’t really shake, or replicate.RADIO:
HOW DID YOU GET INTO RADIO? I’d been doing print/written journalism for the first couple of years into my career and I wanted to find out a bit more about radio. I found Eastside online, shot an email to Tony and I’ve basically been there ever since! WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DAY LIKE? Slightly terrifying. But after meeting the different presenters throughout the day I felt much more at ease. I’ve also felt much gratitude to Virginia Lowe (Presenter of the Lowedown, Tuesdays 9-10:30AM) and Georgie Zuzak (ex-Groovescooter presenter) in particular for being among the first people I met at Eastside and for making me feel especially welcome. WHAT WERE SOME SKILLS THAT YOU LEARNT ON THE JOB? I basically learned everything there is to know about radio. Cataloguing music, assisting presenters on air with guests, crafting particular posts for our website. Later on I learned more in my role as music director, and through the help of others and much practice I learned how to operate the studio and present on air. WHAT WAS IT LIKE BEING THE MUSIC DIRECTOR OF A RADIO STATION AT SUCH AYOUNG AGE?
It was daunting, but also a huge privilege. I learned so much about judging music outside of my own personal tastes, as well as forming relationships with certain music industry people. It was also great to see the wealth of talent we have in the Australian music scene.THE NEW THING:
WHAT’S YOUR SHOW ABOUT? My show is all about new releases. I feature 3 new releases from across the Eastside sound spectrum (jazz, folk, soul, funk, blues, roots, electronic, hip hop) and also play a wealth of new singles from Australian and international artists. I try to keep the balance 50/50 between local and overseas acts, and most of the time it’s definitely not a difficult feat. I also try to do interviews wheneverI can.
HOW DO YOU SOURCE YOUR ARTISTS AND PREP THE SHOW? A combination of research and music industry contacts helps me decide what music to play each week. Mostly the preparation is full of listening to releases and researching the artists I plan to feature so that I can provide context for our listeners. Normally I pull my show together over a few days. WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR IN AN ARTIST TO FEATURE? First and foremost, it all comes down to whether our listeners will have an appreciation for the artist’s sound. After that, it comes down to a number of factors – Is the music well executed? how does the music make me feel? I have a fairly emotional relationship and response to music, so much of my decisions come from there. WHAT’S IT LIKE PRESENTING LIVE RADIO? It definitely keeps me on my toes! The first time my heart almost beat out of my chest all the way to the other side of the room! But it’s that adrenaline that keeps you focused and makes you stay in the zone. So much depends on timing, elocution and knowing what the hell you’re talking about. I like to think that 8.33 times out of 10, I’m able to carry it well. I wish I could present more, I really enjoy the thrill of it. WHAT’S THE THREE DO’S AND DON’T OF SUBMITTING TRACKS FORAIRPLAY?
DON’T:
* HASSLE AND RE-EMAIL IF YOU HAVEN’T HEARD ANYTHING – chances are the person may have deemed it not appropriate for their show. From personal experience, as much as I do try to email people back who directly address their releases to me, I sometimes don’t get around to everyone. An initial email and then a follow up is usuallyreasonable.
* SEND RELEASES THROUGH IF YOU HAVEN’T DONE YOUR RESEARCH – if you don’t know what style or genre of music is played by that particular station/presenter then it’s a waste of your time andtheirs.
* SEND THROUGH MP3 FILES IF YOU CAN HELP IT – good radio quality means .WAV’s for life!Do:
* ATTEMPT TO STIPULATE THE GENRE AS BEST YOU CAN – there is nothing worse than sending a release through without any indication of what may be in store. Many may see it as exhilarating or enticing for a broadcaster, personally I just find it damn annoying. * SEND THROUGH AS MUCH BACKGROUND INFORMATION AS YOU CAN – particularly for an unsigned/emerging artist with not much information publicly available. Personally I like to know the back story of artists, as sometimes it can help you understand the music and may even enhance the listening experience. * SEND THROUGH A PRESS-SHOT! – similar to the point above, but also by sending it through it makes things easier if it comes to promotions through social media channels.UNIVERSITY:
WHAT DID YOU STUDY?
After school, I completed a Bachelor of Communication and Media Studies, majoring in Journalism and professional writing at the University of Wollongong. Last year I completed a Diploma in Sound Production at SAE Institute. WHAT WAS UNIVERSITY STUDY LIKE? Challenging at times, but also really rewarding. Both of my studies gave me a great base knowledge to build upon with real experience. WHAT WERE SOME OF THE BEST AND WORST PART’S OF UNI LIFE? Some of the best times were spent with the friends I made there. I really can’t emphasise how much of a good group of people I met during both of my studies. During my Bachelor studies in particular, I completed an internship subject which also really helped give me real work experience, and also gave me hope that I could really find a job I loved within or in relation to the music industry. Some of the worst times were mainly just trying to face up to the reality of trying to get a job afterwards. Particularly during my journalism degree, a lot of my tutors were very much about pushing the uncertain future of the traditional journalism model. It was a bit hard to keep positive about it during those tutorials. There was a similar vibe during my Diploma as well. HOW DID YOU THEN FEEL GOING INTO THE JOB HUNT? HOW DID YOU MANAGE NOT BEING ABLE TO GET PAID FOR WHAT YOU LOVE TO DO AND STILL PAY THEBILLS?
I felt quite nervous about the job hunt, but also slightly more empowered to prove my tutors wrong I guess! But it really was about interning/contributing as much as possible. The more I got my name out there and got experience in interviewing and writing, the more confident I felt about my ability to get a paid job. It was definitely a struggle to balance my freelance work/radio responsibilities with my paid job. I had to keep strict schedules and make sure I had enough time to complete each task/proof read it and submit it on time, no matter how sleep deprived I would be. But I guess the motivation that I would get work that I wanted soon just kept me going. That and also my family and friends, they were imperative to keeping me positive and motivated.MUSIC JOURNALIST:
HOW DID YOU FIND THE JOB? The first music journalist role I got at Alternative Media Group Sydney, I was referred by a work colleague. I started contributing arts and theatre reviews, and later moved to the music side. I was later asked to be the Music Editor, which at 19 I thought was a pretty big deal. I loved interviewing artists and writing up reviews, as well as compiling the weekly gig guide for the newspapers. I found my current contributing roles at Music Feeds and The Brag through another referral from one of my tutors and through application processrespectively.
WHAT WAS THE INTERVIEW LIKE AND HOW DID YOU PREP FOR IT? I didn’t have to do any interviews to get these jobs (something I feel incredibly lucky for!). WHAT’S A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A MUSIC JOURNALIST LIKE? It differs depending on the tasks I undertake. For interviews it’s all about research and preparation of questions. Whilst talking to the artist, I’m always trying to keep the tone as casual as possible, but also it’s about listening properly. You need to listen and take in what the person is saying, so that you can ask them to elaborate on the point they have just made, or it may even spark another question in your head to ask. After that it’s about writing drafts, re-reading and re-writing where necessary and most importantlysubmitting ON TIME!
WHEN YOU’RE WATCHING A LIVE PERFORMANCE, WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR TOINSPIRE YOUR WORK?
It depends on the genre of music of course, but often it’s the performers ability to bring their skill, entertainment and urgency to their show. How do they sound compared to their recordings? That’s another huge factor, because that’s often the first perception you have of an artist. But it’s not just as black and white as saying “they sound nothing like they do on the record”, which is an interesting dynamic to explore. Does there live performance come across as convincing? How does it affect me and others in the room? It’s also the moments where they take the opportunity to create memories, whether it be through their interaction with the crowd to movements on stage, that combine to make a memorable night/day. WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF YOUR MOST MEMORABLE PERFORMANCES THAT YOU’VECOVERED?
A FEW THAT SPRING TO MIND: Hiatus Kaiyote at VIVID Live, Sydney Opera House Florence and the Machine, Secret Show at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair,Sydney
DMA’s @ The Basement, Sydney WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE INTERVIEW? Again a few that spring to mind: Brendan Urie from Panic! at the Disco (a personal milestone for my former teenage self) Jack Garratt (he was incredibly likeable and super eloquent) Other people that were lovely and interesting to talk to were Remi, Simon from Biffy Clyro, Dom from New Gods, Hat Fitz and Clara, and JonCleary.
WHAT ARE THREE MAJOR THINGS YOU’VE LEARNT FROM THE JOB? * Listen intently – If you’re not listening to what your subject is saying, the conversation is going no where fast. * Don’t take critique of your work to heart – use it as a learning curve and be open to improvements. * theasaurus.com is your friend! – Mix up your adjectives as organically as you can. I still fall into the trap of using the same words quite often. Try to be mindful not to do it. SOUND ENGINEER: ANOTHER ONE OF YOUR TALENTS IS BEING A SOUND ENGINEER. WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO WANTING TO BECOME ONE? I never really had a solid inclination to become a sound engineer and I still don’t. I more so wanted to understand the theory and process behind recording and editing sound for myself. WHAT WOULD BE YOUR BEST TIPS FOR ANYONE STARTING OUT? Don’t be afraid to do free work. Internships/volunteering are the only way you will get experience, and the only way you will get anywhere near a paid job. What’s the project you’re most proud of? (thinking of your music interview project, but it could be something else, worth a plug though??) What was it about and what did it involve? Producing my own radio series for the Community Radio Network to highlight the music scenes in multiple areas around Australia. It was a chance for them to discuss the positives and negatives of their local areas, as well as promote bands from around their area. I was required to research, carry out interviews with these people, edit the audio, create a flowing narrative for each of the ten episodes and submit it within two weeks. It was a challenge, but I’m incredibly proud of what I accomplished and I hope to do more series’ like that in the future. AND YOUR FINAL HAT IS WORKING FOR AMRAP AS THE CD MAILOUT COORDINATOR WHAT DOES YOUR JOB INVOLVE? I liaise with musicians and broadcasters to distribute new Australian music releases to Australian community stations. Stations are provided with releases based on their genre preferences, and artists are provided with a list of stations that have received their release so that they can forge and maintain a relationship with these stations. WHAT’S SPECIAL ABOUT WORKING FOR AMRAP? Amrap’s purpose is basically in line with my own, so it’s an incredibly rewarding job that I am so unbelievably lucky to have. We sit right in between these two sectors, the Music sector and the Community Broadcasting Sector, for which I hold an incredible passion. But not only that, we provide an avenue for music that is created right here within our country to get onto the airwaves and that in itself is awesome. Everyday is a reminder of just how much talent we have right here and it keeps me motivated! HOW DO YOU STAY ON TOP OF ALL THINGS MUSIC NEWS? That’s a good question, mainly just through social media and subscriptions to certain e-news. Music Feeds, BBC , NPR
, Beats 1
, The Brag
, but also DatPiff , Vibe , Rolling Stone.
HOW ON EARTH DO YOU MANAGE EVERYTHING YOU DO!? TIME MANAGEMENT TIPS? With a fair bit of difficulty! I guess it’s all about prioritising, and ensuring you have enough time to get things done and, if you don’t, making sure you don’t sleep until it is done. I’m guilty of getting way in over my head with work, and accepting reviews/interview opps/other work when I clearly don’t have the time to do that. But sometimes, when you have the passion and drive, you kind of forget that your tired and you just do it! WHO ARE YOUR TOP THREE ACT’S TO WATCH OUT FOR? Just days after the nominee’s were announced we’ve received the fantastic news that the 2016 ARIA Fine Arts Award winners are here! Take One sends out a major congratulations to this years alumni, with a special mention to the Jazz and World categories. Eastside can pretty much say ‘we told you so’ when we featured the ‘Best Jazz Album’ winner Vince Jones and Paul Grabowsky’s ‘Provenance’ (ABC Jazz/ Universal Music) as an album of the week when it hit our airwaves but never the less we’re overjoyed for the pair to take out the award. The album beat out stiff competition including the likes of recent The Voice Jazz songstress Emma Pask’s Latin infused ‘Cosita Divina'(Independent/Emma Pask Music),
and Australia’s leading four part A Capella vocal troupe The Idea of North’s ‘Ballards'(ABC Jazz/Universal Music).
Taking out the ‘Best World Music’ Award was the intergalactic ska filled powerhouse album from the Melbourne Ska Orchestra ‘Sierra Kilo Alpha’ (FOUR FOUR/Universal Music) who ran a tight race against ARIA alumni Joseph Tawadros’s ‘World Music’ (Independent/ Planet). It
just goes to show where a little practice and a passion for what you do can take you. For a full list of winners click here.

HI MY NAME IS….NETWORKING FOR INDEPENDENTSSeptember 27, 2016

Comment
When is comes to making your way up the food chain of the music industry, there are the times where a good network of well connected people are key. They say being in the right place at the right time is often the way a lot of artists ‘break it’ in the industry, and networking becomes part of that. As much of a drag it can feel, talking to managers, promoters and ‘the suits’ of music when all you want to do is make music, the world of the independent artist means in part you are the suit for your artistry. The best way to think about it is just like promoting yourself on social media, the more mouths you have talking about you, that have met you, had a good interaction with you, the more ‘ambassadors’ you have flying the flag and extending your reach (to put it in metric terms) for potential collaborations. There are ways to make this process a littlemore enjoyable.
How to network:
*
REMEMBER, EVERYONE YOU MEET IS ANOTHER CHANCE TO EXPAND YOUR NETWORK! From friends who are talented muso’s, to family, the local barista, to the postman. The music industry is a small world and the ‘six degrees of separation rule’ is very much true. It also means that your network stays diverse and not to clustered with similar people which can sometimes be a hinderance more than a help. It’s always handy to have your business card, social media and websites ready to go should you find yourself chatting to someone interested in what you do. Make sure to include a way to stay in touch including the standard email and phone number but also your social tags. Check out Randwick Printing , Vista Printing,
and or your nearest OfficeWorks .2. PLAN AHEAD
After you’ve checked out the organisations and websites below that post events to go out and see, do your homework! Just a quick Google is needed to get across the potential speakers or groups/ people that will be there at the event and nothing works better than a thoughtful compliment to a potential connection that shows you care and know about what they put their time and energy into on a daily basis! For those nervous networkers out there, you should also come up with a few conversation starters to have your back pocket. Remember though that this is not the time to ask them for favours. Your first meeting should be about learning more about each other and not demanding help from the first point of contact.3. FOLLOW UP
To seal the deal and make sure you form a long lasting bond with your new connections, follow up with them. It could be as simple as shooting them an email thanking them for their time, adding them on LinkedIn with a personalise message or even sending out a message to your social media fans promoting their work. Giving back is always important. And also, should you feel you’ve been out of touch for a while, don’t hesitate to drop them a short line. 4. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE – It’s simple, the more you put yourself out there the easier it will be the next time around for you to promote yourself. It’s about learning how to approach this unique environment and balancing talking about yourself with making the other person feel useful. For a little more help check out this short little clip.
WHERE TO FIND EVENTS:the great events.
Facebook – making sure that you subscribe to awesome organisations (like the ones listed below) by liking the page and clicking on their ‘events’ tab and ‘subscribing’ there too will keep you on top of great events!Music NSW
– This is one of the most outstanding organisations aiming to support the creative and economic expansion of the NSW contemporary music industry through advocacy, resource assistance, activating growth of industry infrastructure, delivery of tailored initiatives and provision of advice and referrals. Their current series ‘Sound Advice’ is dedicated to providing networking evenings talking all things music with one event happening tonight! (See below) Vivid Ideas – An off shoot of Vivid Festival, Vivid Ideas brings together thriving minds of the arts and music industries to talk about their passions and push towards developing these areas for the better. You will have to wait a little while for them to come back around but make sure to like their page and keep your ear to the ground for event updates. Bigsound – This is one of the biggest music events in the Aussie music calendar. It’s where promoters, A & R and change-makers converge to meet with the best of our latest and greatest artists. Again you’ve just missed it but it will be back next year. It is quite pricey to go too so look out for grants like those offered by Music NSW and the like to try and cover a little bit of the cost. Women in Music Sydney Australia– Sorry fella’s
but this is WOMEN ONLY! This is the Sydney offshoot of an international organisation with origins in the USA. They’ve already brought the likes of Sound Australia’sMillie Millgate
to a packed house at the Oxford Circus this year and there are moreevents on the way.
Collaborate –
This is a once a month project supported by ‘I Hear Music’which is
divided into two sessions. The first is about promoting discussion within the industry about major issues and the second part sees two outstanding artists perform solo sets and then a collaborated set at the end of the night. Previous guests have included Kerri Glasscock (Venue 505, Sydney Fringe Festival) , Emily Collins (Music NSW) , Alison Avron (The Newsagency, Artist), John Wardle (Live
Music Office) , CarrieLakin (artist) ,
and Arabesk (Artist). The next
event is on OCT 6th!OTHER WAYS –
* Social Media – Everyone, and we mean EVERYONE is using social media for promotion. If you’re only using it however for self promotion you’re missing out on the other major help it can be to advancing your career. Going through key influencer page’s followers to find out who they are interested in is a great way start. You can also check out hashtags to see who is talking about the subjects your interested in and how influential they are to start chatting! * Tripe J Unearthed – This is a great source for connections like other likeminded artists, producers, and the like. Start by searching your favourite genre and see whathappens…
* AMRAP – This is another one of those special key bodies that work 24/7 to help promote and connect local and independent musicians to the wider industry. There are links to radio, promoters and more there. You should also consider posting your music there too if you’re an artist to be able to keep track of who is playing your music and how to get in touch with your mediaaudience.

MONDAY MIXTAPE – JAZZ MEETS HIP-HOP WEEKSeptember 26, 2016
Melanie C

Another week down for the learn it live project but there’s still plenty more music to come. This week’s feature will be seeing the worlds of Jazz and Hip-Hop collide! This is by far no means a new phenomenon thinking back to such stand out tunes as ‘Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)’ ft. English outfit US3 led by producer Geoff Wilkinson that sampled Herbie Hancock’s ‘Cantaloupe Island’ and featuring rapper Rahsaan Kelly in 1993 (to find out how it was made check out thisgreat
article), or even A Tribe Called Quest’s ‘Jazz (We’ve Got)’ that samples the work of saxophonist Eli ‘Lucky’ Thomson, a contemporary of John Coltrane that was included on ATCQ’s second album _The Low End Theory_ (1991). But this story doesn’t just stop internationally,
it spread throughout Australia in its heyday and hasn’t stopped inspiring young talent since. Here are our top picks of home grown talent taking on the fusion genre.30/70
Bio – 30/70 are yet another example of outstanding homegrown talent thriving in Australia’s underground Jazz, Soul revolution. They’ve sold out local venues and albums, toured across the UK, US, Japan, and Mexico, as well as played alongside the likes of recent splendour sensations Sampa the Great, and Ngaiire, as well as Swooping Duck, Koi Child, and Hiatus Kaiyote, all who express interpretations of the genre’s this group inhabits. Their latest LP ‘Cold Radish Coma’ (viaMoontown Records).
Members – Allysha Joy – Voice, Thomas ‘Tang’ Mansfield – Guitar, Synthesizers, Henry ‘Hazy’ Hicks – Electric Bass, Synthesizers (Muff Bender), Zeke ‘Ziggy’ Ruckman – Drums (Salmon Slap), Nathaniel ‘Uncle’ Sametz – Trombone, Reuben ‘The Renegade’ Lewis – Trumpet, Danika ‘Dee’ Smith- Backing vocals on ‘Local Knowledge’ and ‘For You’, Joel Trigg – Keyboards on ‘The Sauce’. SAMPA THE GREAT FT. GODRIGUEZ Bio – Born in Zambia and raised in Botswana, Sampa Tembo found a love for hip-hop at an early age, carrying it with her as she travelled and studied. Her upbringing and life experience inform her lyrics, which cover political and societal imbalances in a meaningful way, tackling heavy themes with a light touch. It’s a quality that runs through her recent debut release The Great Mixtape, produced by fellow Sydney-sider Godriguez. Sampa delicately entwines her poetry through each beat, playfully switching styles to ensure it engages youon every level.
