TURBINIA | WHAT'S ON | DISCOVERY MUSEUM In 1894 he built the world’s first steam turbine powered ship, Turbinia, which changed the face of maritime history and in 1897 was the fastest ship in the world. At 32 metres long, she now dominates the central hall at Discovery Museum. The same principle Parsons used to invent his steam turbine is still powering our schools, homes andwork
TOYS | DISCOVERY MUSEUM Discovery Museum's collection features a wide range of objects from science and technology to fashion and every day household items. You'll see many toys in FASHION | DISCOVERY MUSEUM Fashion. The Discovery Museum is home to a fantastic costume collection. We have fragments of Egyptian fabrics from 700-800BC and even more modern objects, such as a pair of ripped jeans and a hoodie from Primark. Costume can be items of clothing, from dresses to trousers, or could be accessories such as hats or gloves. GREAT FIRE OF NEWCASTLE AND GATESHEAD Great Fire of Newcastle and Gateshead. On Friday 6 October 1854 a fire broke out in Gateshead. This fire slowly spread, eventually reaching a warehouse containing explosive materials. The fire then spread to Newcastle. Make your own actions and sounds to retell the story of the Great Fire with the help of our Talk for Writing Resource.LOCAL HISTORY

This workshop is a great hands-on investigation into Victorian Newcastle through the events of the Great fire of Newcastle and Gateshead in 1854.LOCAL HISTORY
